Not had one but looked at buying one last year, decided that I wouldn't be able to live with the high fuel consumption, high oil consumption and high maintenence costs of the Wankel engine

been speaking to a number of dealers proper mazda ones and they say a service is £250, the oil should be ok as long as the proper oil is used. As for the fuel its only for local runs plus the odd longer journey and cant imagine that it would be more than the bini.

Thanks for replying

Apparently they're not very good for short distant cars because the way the engine works it needs to be revved to higher than 6k to avoid flooding the engine.

this is true with rotary engines. its known as the "6k shut down" or the "3k shut down" to avoid the engine flooding. and they do drink oil! one of the biggest gauges in the car is the oil gauge and this has been done for a reason! lol

anyway the engine flooding is mentioned in the link below.

Hiya mate, i work as a tech apprentis in a mazda dealership, they have there good and bad bits, short jorneys dosnt do em much good, Rotarys love to be thrashed (Hence the rev limiter being 9k! But then again you wont have it blowing up if you only do short jorneys, just treat it for a drive on the weekends  But so long as the space is good for you ( I reccomend test driving one) then you cant really go wrong. I find that because of the inormors tunnel there aint a lot of room for your legs, but saying that most of the guys at my place dont see the problem.

Hope it helps, pipe up if you want anymore info :)

That engine would rip its self to shreds. (watch closely)

It aint really worth trying to explain how a rotary engine works :) its an amazing bit of kit though. Theoretical unlimited rev limits etc... You can get some awsome bhp figures from them, but they dont have any torque.

A mate had the very early Wk. Mazda Sports car and was quite fast on large roads with its hudge rev. range. They still charged him for a 2ltr insurance when they only showed about 800cc.It was not great around town and loved fuel.If one of those engines breaks most say only fit a new one so they cost in the garage. The Rx8 are very cheap secound hand and look good.
If changing brands i would go for the Toyota Supra far more of a car.A real Mad Max Stinker.I love my old Scooby more but in the garage over the years mends and mods. it has cost a fortune over the years. They are very cheap also secound hand due to bills and insurance fees.
You shoud get a good claim price for your car and change to buy a good car, sorry to here about your loss.

I had a red rx8 only problems are that when this is a problem its usually very expensive and also try and get a young one with low mileage as at 100k miles they mostly need new engines or reconditioning which is expensive , but apart from that in ICE is amazing with the bose surround sound system and as people have said the bhp figures achievable are immense :)

when i came to sell the rx8 i bout a silvia s15 and holy crap them cars are immense , i have an s15 anyday over an rx8 but then i only use it for drifting purposes.
