imo you answered your question yourself, Gasless!
Gasless mig is a horrible way to learn, the wire burns hotter, the welds are nastier than gas type and the fumes will make you sick, get some pics up no-one can give you advice on setting up the welder if they cant see what your doing.
They are a waste of time imo gasless
You could also have a problem with the machine depending on the manufacturer but i doubt this even if its a cheap chinese set, personally i would sell it and buy a gas welder or convert it if you sentimental about your present.

Gasless is perfectly fine to use.
Granted, the welds aren't as neat and it's harder to see what you're doing, thus not making it ideal to learn with. However, it is perfectly fine to use gasless and it is possible to learn how to weld with a gasless mig, I know because I've done it.
As others have said, you need to have a fiddle with your settings and technique.

have a fiddle with power settings/wire speed, mig welding does produce a lot of spatter compared to MMA (stick), and does not give as stronger weld as MMA, but is capable of welding thinner materials
as said, get some nice thick steel and practise runnings beads of weld, hold the torch at 45degree angle from the work peice so you can see the weld pool, do little half moons with the torch as your going. i find it easier using the pull technique (bringing the torch towards you), others prefer the push technique, have a go see what you prefer.
practise makes perfect.

when u switch from gasless to gas, u need to switch the welding wire, and switch the cables inside the machine,
from postive to neg and whatnot,
im talking about the ground clamp and gun cables, the way the power flows thur them
thats what my lincoln welder manual said to do anyways
