Went to do some work on my mini today at my pals unit.

We'd spoken about this thread before setting off so conducted a little experiment

On the motorway going there, my speedo saw 90 easily with more to come.

My pal following me in his 407 said I was doing barely 72.

I know his car (French) was wrong and my speedo was spot on though!!!

m standard 1975 mini 1000 on 145 80 10 tyres with no wheel arches etc so absolute standard managed 83mph on the flat on a still'ish day once then i slowed down very quick as one of my wheel trims flew off and over took me. my 1014 with full race 295 head mg metro cam timed to 106 dergees, hif 38 sub stack ram air filter janspeed lcb with single box striaght throught exhaust (40mm internal dia) electronic ignition, 3.4 diff and 145 80 10 tryes again would just touch the ignition light on the standard 998 speedo but i think it miss reads alot, id say it was more like 90-95, i never had it rolling roaded but i was very fast for a 1000 i reckon if would be 55 @ the wheels so 70@fly.

but who cares id rather be doing 40mph throught some very tight bends putting flasher more expensive cars to shame

Despite all the various claims, there really is nothing to discuss here!!!

An 850 is so called due to it's maximum speed of 85mph, similarly the top speed of a 998 is 99.8mph and quite obviously a 1275 can easily reach 127.5mph as standard!! These are well documented & irrefutable scientific facts from a very reliable source (that bloke in the pub is never wrong about this sort of thing :D )

when my old mini was a 998 i had a tonne out of it, gps speed, took ages getting there though :D it used to get redlined and valvebounced everywhere, almost makes me wonder why it only lasted 4 weeks

ferns a 1330 with a piper 649+ race cam, worked head, s/c drops, 3.65 f/d, ive had 120mph out of it, again gps speed, at like 7.5k rpm, obviously on an old runway.

But the fun is in getting there, id still rather be driving a low speed twisty back road.

I had to go out and do a little test
http://i567.photobuc...ck101/lol-1.jpg

out onto the autobahn that is

sorry about the dodgy picture, those autobahns are very bumpy

But did you have a sat nav or something showing how fastyou were actually going?

Best get that fixed, the needles fallen off your speedo there.

haha very good. have you got the rpm, wheel size and final drive ratio?

Urmm will be 10" wheels and a 3.7 diff, should rev to 8k, 1430 with a 296

but for now

Speed's boring, as well as dangerous, Mini's are most fun on roads where keeping above 40 is a challenge because of the bends.

i agree with ethel.... its more fun to hit the hills where the roads are challenging... where's the fun in driving in a straight line trying to reach the ton mark just for the sake of it...

Well it's sort of stage 1. It already had the k&n on, so I just bought the water heated Inlet manifold from minisport, the stage 2 maniflow lcb and a fletcher side exit exhaust. It was then rolling roaded at motoscope in Northallerton, where they re profiled the needle and got 55bhp out of her.

I'll get her rolling roaded again once I get a new cylinder head and cam fitted, and no doubt the correct needle. For the time being i just enjoying driving her.

my speedo does not work properly but im on 10s with a 3.6 diff in it (998 ofcourse) basically std and on the flat i floored it with my partner following and i left her but then again she said she had to do 95 to catch up as i was only doing 92 lol 6k revs too

but seriously dude just remember your sat in a tin can basically....just remember if you hit something odds are you aint getting out of it so dont be too stupid...minis really aint that tough (sorry to sound like a wet weekend but just keep that in your head)
