Yeah anyone can spray paint, but can you do it evenly to produce a good result?

You're also paying for the labour of prepping it which is probably more time consuming than actually spraying it.

Sure anyone can spray a car, but if you want a good result it will take many hours of prep, and if you dont have the experience then it could take even longer.

If you have the time to take the car off the road for a couple of weeks to strip it, sand, prep, prime and then spray then you probably could do it cheaper.

£1000+ does sound expensive at first, but when you realise how much time is required to do it - on top of costs, then it's not a bad price really. But it still hits hard.

Try speaking to some people in your local club, they might have done some of their own spray jobs, and no doubt you will be able to see the result on their car there and then. They might be able to do it cheaper for you.

Even if you considered rattle canning it, cans from Halfords are what? £8 each? You'd need a fair few of those say at least 10+ - that's £80 then the same again for primer and lacquer/varnish. That, plus other bits will bring it to at least £300.

Now that you can't get auto-finish celulose it has made things so much more difficult. To spray 2-pack you need a properly heated and ventilated workshop plus a much better type pf mask. I always did my own spraying with celulose, but as I like a decent finish I now pay a professional to do it in 2-pack. I do still have a bit of a stock of Tartan Red and Old English White auto-celulose, but when that's goneit'll be a problem.
You can buy celulose, but it's now industrial quality and is slow-drying.

Yup, my local auto paint will still happily sell me automotive celly and 2pack(and knacker-laquer as well)

I can also get the same from a Max meyer stockist and also lechler(only celly though)

Last quote was under £100 for 5 ltrs of celly, barcoat and some high gloss thinners.

When I needed to paint the roof of my Innocenti last year I got the paint code - it's a white, and had it mixed by my usual supplier whom I've used for years. It looked and smelled just like the stuff I've sprayed for the last 50 years. However, although it seemed 'touch-dry' quite quickly, I realised it did not harden fully for a long time - like over 4 weeks! Spoke to my supplier and he said that now cellulose is not legal for cars, only for industrial applications, the old auto-cellulose is no longer available. I'm not a paint specialist, so all I can do is repeat what he said. Apparently the old auto stuff had an additive which enabled quicker full hardening.
I blame the EU (as usual!).

Last lot of celly I had was marked up "classic car"

Seemed fine to me, mind you I'm no great shakes as a painter.

My friend who runs our local marina paints steel-hulled canal boats using a roller. Fantastic finish which he says can be wet-flatted and buffed to give a gloss finish.
Anyway, thanks for the links to 'proper' celly suppliers. It wouldn't have helped with Cooperkid's (my Grandson) MPI as it's dark green metallic with light silver roof. Wow, it looks fantastic and when it has its Mk 1 grill & surround, Mk 1 indicators on the front, no bonnet stripes, no side stripes, a 1961 'Morris' bonnet badge, and no wheel arch extensions it will look seriously 'retro'. He even found a pair of 6" Hella driving lights on a shelf in my workshop and 'blagged' those too. He's removed the boot lid badge and replaced it with a 1961 'MINI MINOR' badge and we are looking for a boot lid flush mounted rear fog light to replace the 'rust generating' cheap-looking standard one.

At my cousins spray shop resprays all start from £1200 upwards,

it all depends on what you want doing, what kind of paint you want, how much work is needed to prep the body work for painting.

so if you want a respray and your car is in good condition then it can cost as little as £1200 but i know people who have paid over £3000 to have their minis resprayed soo...

you shud really take it to a bodyshop and ask for a quote:)
