Back to the orginal point.

With the tyres available in road legal format. ie 165 section tyres, there is only so much contact patch you can put on the road, which means there is an optimum wheel width. I run 10 x 5's and a mate runs 10 x 6's. There appears to be no major visual difference in contact patch, so i would suggest that once you get to 5 inch wide, there isn't much point in going any wider for more grip.
The only difference you will get from the different widths is sidewall flex, obviously the wider the wheel the tyre is stretched onto, the less flex the sidewall will have to some extent.

So, based on the original question, with the tyres available, you won't get anymore performance out of 10 x 7's than you would with 10 x 6's. You may even get less performance? Without some real testing in this area we can't be sure.

You said it yourself. Recommend. Its a guideline. get over it! If you dont want to do it, then dont. we get the point, you dont think its safe. Fine. we get the point. But there is been no well known issues, and its the drivers choice at the end of the day.

All this "we get the point" talk, are the folk who follow the guidelines written by the tyre companies really the minority?

Has anyone here actually said "it is dangerous", or have they (and me included) simply said, "it's not advisable".

I think it is you who need to chill out, I have admitted stretching tyres myself with no ill effects but I still wouldn't happily tell someone to go for it knowing that it is going against what the tyres were designed for and they will be hurtling down roads at high speed.

It is the drivers choice, so let it be, and stop telling people that they are idiots for following manufacturers advise! Speaking of which- I was going to tig weld a big bead of ally round my new pistons so they fit tighter in the bores and get loads more power, a mate did it and it ran for ages before siezing up so it must be fine!

I think my point of view is correct and every one should tow the line just because i type in red letters

It was copied and pasted from what the mods have put above every page in this section?!

Why is everyone so bitchy?!

Anyway Harri- I personally think that unless you are going to be cornering at lots of G's you would be better off with 6's than 7's. Probably soak up less power and still plenty wide enough to get loads of grip from your min :)

It appears that it's 3 points on your licence and £60 fine. If you are a young driver in the first 2 years from passing the test, you then if caught have only 3 points left before you start again. The offence would be 'driving a motor vehicle in an unsafe condition'. And that is without going into the insurance aspect.
Now, what you have to ask yourself is whether it's worth the risk of 3 points to drive with wheels which are wider than the manufacturers define as suitable for no gain in performance.
If it so safe, as some claim, then why do the manufacturers not list wider wheels as suitable and, therefore, safe?
If you look at the Yokohama web site, you'll find that for their 165/70x10 tyres they recommend a max rim width of 5.5".

isn't it 3 points per wheel ?

Who cares how many points ... I had 10x7s and with a pokey motor they exaggerate torque steer. They look ace IMO but after downsizing to 10x5.5 I won't be going back on the basis that my car now handles.

They don't even look that stretched anyway! If your not going to help the man with the question he asked then keep it to yourself!

All this \\\"we get the point\\\" talk, are the folk who follow the guidelines written by the tyre companies really the minority?

what the hell you on about? Minority? What? ok you might have to spell this one out because I am totally confused as to the point of this sentence. Obviously the people who stretch the tyre are in the minority.... is that what you trying to say? Still cant see the point in the sentence?!

Has anyone here actually said \\\"it is dangerous\\\", or have they (and me included) simply said, \\\"it\\\'s not advisable\\\".

Its about having the opinion rammed down peoples throat that we object to, over and over and over again. and the red font wasnt just a copy and paste jobbie, it was once again made to be red. Which we can all change the colour of our font to emphasis our points if we wish, but it starts to make the forum look rather messy. So we dont do it. Its a privilege left to the admins and mods!

I think it is you who need to chill out, I have admitted stretching tyres myself with no ill effects but I still wouldn\\\'t happily tell someone to go for it knowing that it is going against what the tyres were designed for and they will be hurtling down roads at high speed.

No one TOLD him to go do it. even us who are in the \\\"pro\\\" camp for 10x7 have clearly listed and stated the issues and legalities.

Good grief!! All this over a tyre, this all boils down to giving people the correct information and then letting them take it away and do with it what they will.

We need to remember that there's a lot of impressionable and inexperienced people who are gonna read this and we owe it to them to make sure they are aware of the facts and best way of doing things.

I'm no tyre expert but I do believe that the way the tyre seats on the rim of a mini does not lend itself to stretching and can be potentially dangerous. Should people be aware of this and all the other implications that go with it(insurance/prosecution) and still wish to continue then I don't think theres anything we can do to stop them, and this thread descending into a flame fest isn't gonna achieve anything.

nope, but it sure makes for good reading! :)

Ok, grand master Shifty has spoken! (we bow to the correct use of coloured ink!)

I think theres more than enough here for the op and any others experienced or inexperienced to make their own minds up.
