hi can someone explain the lapping in thing again.
i think i understand but i just want to be sure. does it involve putting the pin into the chuck of a drill and spinning it inside the cup to sort of bed them together? cheers.

Ball joints replaced and then failed MOT

That's basically it. You use a small amount of grinding paste between the two surfaces to reduce the imperfections.

select one taper pin and 1 cup and coat the inside of the cup and the mating face of the pin lightly with some fine valve lapping/grinding paste. assemble the ball joint onto the hub minus the springs and using a small drill, cordless is fine, put the threaded part in the chuck and tighten it lightly just enough to grip the pin. Spin the pin slowly and tighten the cup down gradually until it causes some resistance and then work(swivel) the pin in al directions an as it laps in it will free up a bit so apply some more pressure by tightening the cap by hand a bit more. After a minute or so, dis-assemble the pin, clean the parts throughly (aerosol can of brake cleaner reccomended) and the hub and if possible blow out the grease ways aswell to ensure no paste is left in there. then assemble and shim the pin before grinding the next one so you dont mix up the parts you have already lapped.
