The dampers do not change the height of the car they purely dampen bumps etc. See previous replies:
Cerberus - As has been said though, the dampers have no effect on ride height. You can put the car down with no dampers on, all they do is damp the suspension.
bmcecosse - The only parts that affect the height are the rubber cones (and possibly the plastic cup if damaged) - the fruit machine lads will know what to do!
Me - The shocks/dampers have nothing to do with the ride height, although it does seem that these have failed to some extent as they are leaking.
me - The rubber springs are what carries the weight of the car, just like a set of coil springs on a modern motor.

ibrooks -The shock absorber does not support the car - the springs do that. The shock absorber simply applies a bit of control to the rate at which the spring can expand and compress. The shock won't have any effect on the ride height of the car.
