I used to keep mine on but not now. It does make a supprising difference to fuel consumption and they are quite noisey if left on.
I agree a huge difference in both cases (fuel and noise)!
The increased wind noise is to be expected, but why it should have such a drastic effect on fuel consumption must be a freak of aerodynamics. The frontal area of the steel tubing cannot be greater than the frontal area of, say, wheel arch extensions, but a roof rack really does put extra fuel tax money in the pockets of our leaders.

Its all about the roof racks!! Got the one on the Estate with the car, and got the one on the round nose for free for the mrs.
Does anyone recognise the one on the Estate? I have NEVER seen one like it, had it valued at £300 as well about 12 months ago.
The mrs prefered mine on hers so weve swapped however...

Mine was initially on an old volvo amazon/Pv, 30 quid for the rack, couple of quid for some metal polish, then about 20 for window frame 'strips' for the wood, stained the same colour as my steering wheel.

Got this beuty off fleabay for £5 and the bloke only lives 10mins away! Picking it up at the weekend, good lick of paint and i think i have myself a bargain!
