Hi everyone, thought I would share this with u all n see if your as shocked as me! I'm doing a 89 rebuild n stripped the car n refurbished my shell n engine, I seen the braided brake lines on minisports bogus 2 and fancied doing the same to mine!

On enquiring about if it can be done n price I was u can say bait shocked, an average set of complete brake lines is about £80, the braided ones.................................£400/£500 wow

Don't think I'm up for paying that but was wondering if it could be done by myself, does anyone know were I can buy the required parts from?

:))

You can do it as long as you're willing to buy the required tool to fit the hose ends. Budget about £2500 for a worn second hand one. Oh yes and then tell your insurer that you made you own brake hoses, see what they say!

You dont need to tell your insurer who made them you just need to let them know that they are on there, then if they was to ask about the make of them just tell them the manufacturer of the part, unless they specifically ask who built up the brake lines there is no need to tell them

There's no real need to tell them anything, until their assessor looks at your wrecked shell and starts asking questions and then you wish you'd told them everything. Liability insurance required to make brake parts professionally costs a fortune, insurance companies do not like home made or modified brake parts and the reasons should be obvious.

As I understand it are you not an apprentice mechanic? So it's part of your job to make brake lines. Anything done by a professional mechanic or garage will be accepted by an insurer, even if it's done badly! Also I think you'll find there's a difference between making up the ends of solid lines with a flare and making flex hoses that have to be assembled with special tools in a specific way.

im not an apprentice, been there done that, im now qualified, what im getting at is, i made mine at home, so therefore, i dont think id be covered by liability insurance. i made my flexies as well at my mates work.

Sorry for suggesting you were still an apprentice! The liability insurance only comes into play if the insurer or someone else decides to chase and sue someone who has manufactured a dodgy component. It wouldn't apply if you made your own parts. I only ought it up as a reference. If you were trained to do what you were doing, then it's fine. It's if you make it up as you go along with no experience that the insurers become twitchy and want things like engineer's reports, like on modified calipers for example.

Wow, 1st of all to minimalal, it's brake lines I'm on about not brake hoses but thanks anyway.

But 2nd what's with all the argumentative talk about legalities and so on! If the tool is as expensive as suggested then the £400/500 which I said the quote was probably seems abit more reasonable,

As for fitting brake line I'm more than qualified to fit them but also sure that many people fit them themselves to the own cars, restorations and kit cars.

Thanks

Im not sure that there is a expencive tool needed to make aeroquip brake lines or any other braded line for that matter.

I have been away on a few rallys where we have made lines up out of Goodrich braded hose with few tools for vehicles without problems.

You just need a hack saw corect sized spanners and the corect fittings thats are very expencive and olives 'new olives every time' the lines are dissasembled.

Typeing in venhill on Ebay comes up with lots of fittings, lines and so on there should be a kit some where with most things needed.

you dont need expensive tools to make your own brake lines...

my cars fitted with FULL brade throughout, the pipes lengthed, cut, brade pulled back, end put in, olive put it, the end screws onto the 1st part and the seal is made by crushing the olive into the shape of the 2 fittings, simply pull the brade upto the fitting and put some heat shrink over the start of the fitting and the start of the brade

but you do have to think abotu your fittings, no point using cheap plated fittings, they dont last aswell as decent jobs.

we get all our dash3 fittings and pipe from Earls
