I love this clubman, first saw this project thread when I signed up to the forum, and finally found it again. It has come a long way since then it has to be said. I have to commend you on the quality of the work, looks incredible.

My Mum has always wanted to do the interior on my clubman, and your work has really inspired her. Just out of interest do you now roughly how much leather you used?

Sam

Cheers for the kind words.
I have used about seven hides, one of which was perforated. The headlining I did used the best part of 1 1/2 hides. It also comes down to how selective you are with natural marks and stuff, I don't mind the odd healed scar, it shows that it's a natural product after all. With bits that don't look as good I'd always try a put them in areas that won't be seen. This way I use as much of the hide as possible. There is always going to be bits that are no good.
Perforated always hides a lot of marks so you end up being able to use a lot more of the hide.

Adding binding to give that finished look.

IMAG2747_zpsb37ycrny.jpg

Re-doing the fake wood trim, as the original stuff was totally shot. It was also a pain to get off.
The vinyl came from America as I couldn't find what I was looking for here. This stuff unlike Fablon has a texture to it like the original.

Also had a friend do some embroidery for me.

And this is where I intend to use one, as a handle to lift the false floor in the boot.

I`m loving that vinyl, I need some for my clubby as the n/s wing is a different shade from the rest. What company do you buy it from ?

I was thinking about using small countersunk hammer rivets fitted from the back of the trims to hold the buttons that the stainless trims pop on so I could use 3M or tiger seal to stick trims back on rather than drill potential rust catching holes in my new doors and wings.

What`s your plan ?

These are the people I got the vinyl from, pretty sure this is the same colour but not 100%. They do 5 or 6 colours in the textured stuff I think and a lot more colours/grains non-textured. This listing is only for 10cm x 20cm, you are going to need a lot more. If you want to do one side in one strip of material to make sure the wood grain stays constant and matches down the length of the car (which I have done) you are going to need roughly 120" in length.

As for fixing the strips to the car I'm going to use the original method of the rivets with the cups that the chrome trim clips onto. I'll be coating the back side of the trim in a lot of dynax UB to protect from rust.

These are the same kind of rivets originally used, they are a little bigger than original so some fettling will be needed. These may seem expensive but my dad did find some company selling the correct size rivets but at nearly £2 a rivet it was never going to happen when you consider you need 96 of them.

That`s excellent, thanks for the info.

I managed to keep a few of the business ends of the original rivets when I drilled them out hence the csk rivet idea.

As for the rivets you have found BSF223P I believe they are the same as 13H743 from Minispares, As you say they are bigger measuring 8.45mm as opposed to 6.53mm  originals. my trim gaps average 6.13mm so thats 0.5mm to pop them on so close to 2mm will have to come off one side of the stainless trim thus moving the trim 1mm off center which may cause issues on the end trims.

I bought some of the plastic ones from somerford minis a while ago and didn`t like the hole size or durabiliy. I can`t find them at the moment to check if they will actually hold the trim on as the size suggests they will be a little too loose.

I guess it wouldn`t be all the world to modify some cheap standard rivets on a CNC lathe ? You would need a 2.65mm thick collar.

I wonder if these on ebay 360927360958 would do the trick as the csk head would locate the trim and the raised part would ease location A 3mm tap in a cordless drill and plenty of threadlock and quite a few could have nuts on the back ? 100 in stainless for £6.85 delivered.

Actually reading on the head is 5.6mm so they would probably require the head splaying slightly....bugger!

Or something along the lines of this knocked up on a CNC and held on with standard rivets 161139903814 ?

Who were the £2 a rivet gang !!

I asked my dad he said they were also from Bresco but I can't find them on their website anywhere.

As for the plastic ones we also got a few just to try can't say i was overly confident in them they seemed to be just that bit too slim and not grip the chrome trim that well. Plus i think you have to drill out the holes in the body for them to fit.

The cupped rivets I got from Bresco measured around 7mm making it roughly 0.5mm bigger then original, I was planning on doing what you suggested but taking a bit off both sides of the chrome trim so that it would still sit central.

They were in Bresco's Rare and Obsolete section but i can't see them anywhere. Give them a call, the guy there is very helpful. When i ordered the Tuckers clip (as they are called) he rang me to check whether i knew they were slightly oversized and did point out the rare ones. It is possible theyve now been sold. Obviously to a rich restorer! Good outfit, good service is all i can say, when we first looked they were happy to send a couple of samples. Hell of a varied stock.

Thanks for the replies.

7mm is a lot better than 8.45mm so it won`t be too much trouble to fit. I`ll get some in as well

The clips are also used on original mk1/2 Cooper window trims around the doors so I guess that`s why they are probably sold out. I`ll give them a call as I need 3 for my mk2 as the ones from minispares are huge and only fit repro trims.

I read their website wrong, I thought the cup measured 7mm but actually reading it properly its for a moulding gap of 7mm. Just went out and measured one and the actual cup measures 7.8mm.

So most likely a little too big, as there isn't much material to take away from on one of the sides. Bummer.

Dam :(  The search continues.

The CNC plan might not be out yet as it may be the only way to  get it spot on. There are a few CNC`ed washers on Ebay for motorcycle screens etc so I suppose once programmed it will knock out a couple of hundred fairly quickly. Then use a standard pop rivet to hold them on as there is plenty of room inside the trim.

Watch this space, we're going to try an alternative plastic clip. Possibly this one, the dims looks about right:

We'll let you know how we get on only I suspect we 're likely figure out a solution before. We've had a look at your principle, it looks a bit tricky although plausible.

I have now got the side windows and frames in and bolted on the wheel arches.
The chap that painted the car came by last weekend and sorted out a couple of marks it had picked up during the rebuild he also polished and waxed it.

IMAG2763_zpsbd1v9eft.jpg

Just hung the side trims on to see what it's going to look like. We think we have found a solution for the fixings now. Hopefully they will arrive tomorrow so I can get them on properly.
