Woooooo it does indeed start 12h. The following 389NH doesn't seem to come up on the drop downs though.

If this turns out to be the right engine I think this car will have been £400 very well spent.

Are you definately reading it correctly? The plate can get pretty corroded, I don't recognise that combination!

The engine number was very very corroded and the fact I was reading it by torch light hasn't helped so in using the v5. I was rather worried when my number didn't appear in the drop downs so I've been huridly searching since. I've just stumbled across this document bellow though which looks like good news. If you check the top right of page 2....

Link doesn't work but I have all those (excellent) Somerford .pdfs saved and have just found the info I think you're implying...

12/389 - 1275GT with Remote 'change and rubber coupling driveshafts.

Perfect :D

Oh, and £400.... that was a bargain!

That's the document I saw last night and has left me ever so happy with the car.
According to that I'm looking for a single timing chain when I strip the engine to rebuild it in the next couple of weeks to confirm all is well.

Did they really use a simplex timing chain on a 1275GT? Good old BL cost-cutting..!

What website are you using to put your engine number in?

Well this is far from the most interesting update but I thought i'd stick it on anyway as it was a pretty key stage. Anyhow, Tuesday night Myself and a workmate nipped to the garage and dragged the shell into work with his car. This meant I was able to get the grinder on the door hinge the nuts were too corroded to get a socket to undo.

Withthat done we strapped it to the back of a friends BMW and dragged it up to Pro Strip in Nottingham. They see, really friendly to deal with so far so if the job is done to a good standard i'll be happy as.

Looking at around 3 weeks before i get the shell back but i've told them to let me know if i need to bring a trailer or a bin bag to bring it home lol

Excellent, I think a 'dip' is the best way to start off restoring a shell.
I'd do it to all of mine, but still think the cost is a little too high :(

Also gives you some space to start dismantling the subframes etc :D

Hi will be keeping an eye on this thread as one of my first minis circa 1982 was a blaze orange 1275GT which before it was rebuilt looked in considerably worse condition than yours, i have attached a couple of the finished photos to spur you on!
Cheers Gary

Back at the garage and time to assess

In all fairness it's in really good nick for a car that's nearly 40years old.

Boot floors been damaged at some point and not had the best repair. Also quite a bit of rot in the corners.

Posted Image

Inner wings have gone in an annoyingly awkward place.

Posted Image

Posted Image

There's a few bits in normal mini places.

Posted Image

Posted Image

And an old repair in the corner of the floor.

Posted Image

There's obviously a few other bits and bobs that will need sorting but they're the most obvious. Overall I'm really happy with it and can't wait to get my teeth into it.

The shell is excellent :D The rot in the corners at the front (by the fresh air vents) is extremely common and no problem with the outer wings removed.
It'll upset the MPi chaps but your 40 year-old shell is in far better condition than some of the last injected cars are now
