Hello again, so i went ahead and got a 13 row oil cooler kit! I havnt bothered with a thermostat due to the crappy fittings they use which imo is more of a risk than running slightly cool oil on a cold winters day!

so with the kit i got 2 stainless braided pipes and ive fitted the cooler under the altenator as instructions said but guess what... the pipes arnt long enough! typical. so another trip to mosses for a longer MGB pipe sorted that out - which they gave me free of charge may i add! with it all fitted i replaced oil/filter etc and started her up. Ran fine and oil pressure stayed at 45psi on idle once warmed up with 20w50 oil. i took her for a long blast on dual carrageway at lets say... a decent speed around 4.5k revs consistant and then pulled over to see idle pressure sit perfectly at 45 again! excellent! i checked engine bay and there were no oil leaks and no sweet smell of boiling hot oil!

so all in all this cooler has worked perfectly and evidently they are a good idea if you do any motorway driving or like to drive fast with a low ratio box!

thanks again to all who made suggestions and gave advice - much appreciated!

20w50 is far too thick for colder temperaturees in the uk 10w40 is much better. plus it runs well in tractors.

Where on earth did you get that from. The mineral-based 20w50 is the very best oil to use in a Mini and the only time I would consider using anything else would be in a country where the ambient temp in Winter was well below zero. What have tractors to do with Mini oil?

Halfords, GSF car parts, Gear Works.......

and the fact that tractor oil works very well in minis shows that it doesn't actually matter what oi you put in it at all. I used olive oil once.

If Halfords or GSF (who are they?) told you to use 10w40, it's because Rover changed the oil spec without changing the components the oil was for. Typical blooming Rover stupidity for which they became famous! Like they mixed metric and imperial threads on the braking system - but that's another story of Rover stupidity. One wonders if they actually had any qualified engineers working there (pay peanuts - get monkeys!).

But if you want to put rubbish oil in, don't let anyone on here stop you. By the way 'Guessworks' is great for gearbox re-builds.
