You can throw as much money as you like at a 998 and (unless its turbo'd) it will still get done over by a fairly standard 1275.

A friend of mine spent SILLY money (about £1800) on a 998 having it overbored and what not, pulled 78bhp on the rollers at the fly. And my £100 MG Metro 1275 still went by him at ease, used nowhere near as much fuel and was a damn site more reliable.

IMO, Why spend thousands on a 998 and have a nippy engine, when you could spend less on a 1275 and achieve so much more.

If you like 998's because of how they rev, drop a 998 box on a 1275, other than that they are a waste of time, money and space...

That statement is so wrong is laughable, also £1800 is a drop in the ocean when it comes to biulding any high spec engine.

Not laughable, only a fool would chuck money at an engine that if the same money was spent on a 1275 would be a very fast engine.

The only good small bore power, is small bore power built on a budget for a laugh, IMO. (Pocketed/Stroked)

Let's dispel some myths here shall we.
The 998 is a very smooth engine compared to a 1275. It is easy to achieve the same power as a standard 1275 (say 65 bhp or more) but it will lack the torque of the bigger block. If building for Mini for a motor sport application you could be better off with a 998 as it will be in the sub-1000 cc class and thus potentially more competitive for a class win (unless there are Hillman Imps about!). The shorter stroke of the 998 makes bore wear less at the same revs as mean piston speed is lower. The 998 is a lot of fun.
Now onto gearboxes. It can be very necessary to fit a close ratio straight cut gearbox to a 998, not because of the stronger gears, but because the closer ratios make it possible to run a hot cam and still stay on the power through the bgears when coupled with a low ratio final drive. Unless it is for racing or hill climbing, SC drop gears are never necessary in 1 998. For hill-climbing or racing the SC drops enable the overall drive ratio to be 'adjusted' for specific circuits.

Couldn't agree more, every time we go to the 'Ring at least one new runner is stunned that our car is a small bore. As for using more fuel keeping up with a 1275, that simply isn't true. We fuel up at Brands, and only once on the way. I think only the original 850 that came with us one year has ever stopped for fuel less frequently.

hi fool speaking here (according to your statement)

when i first got my mini on the road insurance is expensive for us young ones, so to learn what is what and to go faster i build a nice 998. the spec was
1014cc, 948 minisport cam, 12g295 head, full engine balance, lightened flywheel and pressure plate, janspeed lcb with single 1.75 rc40, hif38 on alloy inlet with ramair filter and sub stack, compression ratio was 10.37:1. it went quite well and gave 49bhp at the wheels and was good fun on 145 10's and drum brakes it was one on the best handling minis i have driven.

then after 6 months i went a step further; the cam was changed to mg metro item and timing in more acuratly, 12g295 head was moddifed alot so it had 33mm rimflow inlet valves and rimflow exhaust valves all port out as far as is safe, the compression was uped to 11.2:1 and the exhaust was changed to a 38mm striaght through pipe with a vw polo center silencer (not a single restriction from lcb to tail pipe. now it went so well i had to uprate to discs and with a 3.4 diff would pull a genuine 100mph on the level on a clear day, on the drag strip it would beat my mates (70bhp at the wheels 1275 3.1 diff) off the line and then keep there for the first 150feet.
and on the motorway it averaged 45mpg, daily was 40mpg

call me a fool but i had some fun with the little 998, i even acidently passed and outran a unmarked police car down a twisty b road

ps now i can afford the insurance i have a tuned 1275
