Hi,

I am just about to put a sound system in my mini (doesn't have anything in it atall at the moment:()

so i was just looking for some advice on a few things

my setup consists of-

-a terrible ripspeed headunit (this will be changed when money builds up again)
- 2 sets of fusion component speakers (cs-cm60's)
- 800 watt kenwood amp
- 12 inch JL audio subwoofer

I am just about to build a dash board, recover my door cards and build a speaker box setup to go on the rear seat, so everything can be modified to any recommendations by people on here

so where would you position the components ?

i have 4 of them so i thought two in the dash and two in an under seat speaker board as this would give a nice surround sound feel ? and im not sure where would be best to mount the 4 tweeters :/ ?

the other idea would be to put them all in the front? 2 in the dash, and 2 in speaker pods or something ?? (i've read many times put speakers infront of you ect ect:P)

finally

the box i will need to make to mount my sub,

i've read on the internet that a 12 inch sub sealed enclosure will work well with about 2-3 cubic feet of air in the box? does this sounds right? how do you decide between sealed or ported ?

when i had this sub in my mini, i'm pretty sure i made the box too small, and i just couldn't turn the amp up without it just making a popping ish sound, it was slightly cured by drilling a small 20 mm hole in the side, but it wasn't great.......was this all because of the box not being correct or could there be an actual problem??

any advice would be awesome!!

Ok to start with, less is more, especially in a mini.

Surround sound? So are you looking to buy a Surround sound processor and an amp for each channel? Sorry I know you not but you cant just stick speakers in and go there is a speaker in each corner its Surround sound…. Not its not… it just a wall of sound and a mess.

Unfortunately you bought before getting advice which is a problem but it is, was it is.
2 set of comps where a waste of your money. A simple starter system which setup right will blow all these bling mega speaker count installs out the water is simply:

Headunit
Set of comps at the front.
Sub.
4 channel amp.

How long have you had the 2 sets of comps? Can you take them back, and get a refund or just swap of the best set of comps the value adds up to?

The positioning of the comps at the front:
Pods or doors for the mid bass, aim the up and in.
Tweeter on the top of the dash in the corners or up the A-piller a little, aim them cross (driver side aimed at passengers head and vice versa)

You will need to give Model details for the Sub before anyone can comment on encoulse size… and stop drill holes in boxes! what the hell just stop it LOL If the sub it make a noise drill I hole is not the answer!

And the model of the amp please… cheers

can you explain why the second pair of speakers wont make it sound any better ?

especially when most cars today modern or classic with new installs have speakers in each door ect?

basicly the mini is to small for rears, and you are best of investing as much as you can on the front...

Here's the recommended sub enclosures for your sub...



Your amp bridged into one channel gives off 460 watts rms, or 150 rms into 2 channels

Your sub is 300 watts rms so you may need to buy a seperate amp. Especially if you're running 2 sets of comps

i'm taking the 2 sets of components back tomorrow and replacing them with one better pair, and these will just be ran off the head unit unfortunatly

so if i bridge the amp to give off 460 watts rms, how do i make sure i dont blow the sub up and set it up all correctly :s ?

Seriously, do this right…

Amp the front speakers get that all working then add the Subwoofer.

I know all everybody wants is bass, but do things the right way.

Many SQ system don’t even have subs they just let the mid bass (at least 6.5”) run without a high pass.

Get that all working then start building the box for your sub and save and buy a second amp for the Sub later.

You should be able to pick up a amp to drive it for £100 or even get a second one of the Kenwoods they look quite I nice amp for the money.

I presume the kenwood amplifier is a 4 channel amplifier.

Can it drive a 2 ohm load?

Wire two components up for a two ohm load each side at the front. Ditch the tweeters from one set... Youll need some form of active crossover prior to the amplifier unless the amp has a crossover built in.

then an amplifier to run the sub on the rear.

i'd love to do that...but i really can't spend any more money on speakers and amplifiers ect.......

me and my dad have bought a mini 7 racer out here in newzealand, and very sooon i'll have to start chucking all my money into that...so unfortunatly thats not an option:)

the components i will buy will be on the dash,.......would building them an enclosure(fixed to the back of the dash) make a difference??

so i took one set of the speakers back today, i was going to change both sets for one better set, but i figured that i'm not even going to be able to make these fusions do any work without amping them up,

so what i would like to know is,

with my current amp, sub and single set of components, could i wire the components and sub to the amp?

if i did this would it just make my sub a waste of space because there wouldn't be enough power going to it to make it really effective?

You should be able to pick up a cheap amp from Trade Me and run your sub from that. I picked up a Fusion D-class here for £20 (NZ$45) so there are deals out there.

awesome i'm in hamilton too! only problem i have now is that i only have a single rca output from my current radio...

is there any other way of wiring it up so i can use two amps off my existing head unit??

also, obviously for the big amp to the sub i am using some big heavy duty cable running straight from the battery(through a fuse ofc)

but if i was to buy this smaller amp, does it also have to have power coming directly from the battery itself? how'd you wire smaller baby amps like that one up so its not total overkill ?

That suggested amp has an RCA pass through output I believe, so just go head unit > comp amp > Sub amp.
Or get a pair of RCA Y splitters.

As for wiring, just wire it the same way. You can never go over the to with power for an amp, it just a matter of cost really.
