Have a read through this especially part II
http://www.legislati...988/52/contents

I cannot find anything on the VOSA website with regards to tyres extending past the wheel arch. As long as they do not foul, are in legal condition then all is good.
However the old bill may decide to pull you if they are feeling so inclined but even reading through the traffic act its very grey regarding this issue.

It's a bit of a minefield to be honest and this particular question has been raised on many other forums especially the off road guys.

Personally yours look ok and at the end of the day if the MOT man says it's ok then who are you to argue.

If the police do deicde to pull me I can't see it being for the wheels. They may add it to the list though if I do get stopped but I'm sure they'll give me a warning first time. After all, it is a very blurry subject in the rule book :D

Wheels sticking out beyond the arch is nothing to do with the MOT... It is not part of the test...

it is but we wont go there

12x6 and w&p the way forward

If you could provide the section in the Tester's guide which covers the protrusion of wheels then I will gladly rescind my statement, however, I'm yet to be shown different.

If the wheels foul the arch on either lock then I agree, this is a fail.... but protrusion is not...

i worked as a mot tester about 8 years ago and it was stated that if tread was visable when you look from above it is a fail but thats going back 8 years so might of changed but i can't remember what part of the test it falls into.

I know in our area it is very rare that an MOT tester will fail a car for having the wheels sticking out. But the local police will pull you over & fine you if they can see the tread. You can get away with the side wall but not seeing the actual tread. I was actually told by an MOT tester that the "Rules have changed"!!
