1987 Mini Mayfair Project

Hi I’m Louis from Manchester, recently picked up my ’87 Mayfair that I have had in storage for a good few months after clearing out the garage.
Due to lack of time with my previous job, the project has been moving along very very slowly, but since taking on a new position at Williams Mini, I have got more weekends to myself and hopefully get cracking on the Mini.

This is my first experience with a classic mini, having worked on newer mini's and my latest toy, which ive now sold, because of not using it with the compant car.

That's not me in the pic by the way :)

Posted Image

This was when i was first brought it back to the garage. EXCITED to get to work!!!

Safely in garage, but still full of stuff!!

Posted Image

New clean home all emptied, ready to get going.

I did plan on going the Pro-Motive route, after buying my 5PW R1 engine, (which is now for sale, message me for details :)) but working out with a friend its going to cost me an absoloute fortune!!! so scrapped that idea and planned to go ahead with an A Series, keep it more original

Anyway, here’s my plan of action for the forth-coming months/years

Bodywork:

Front Panel
N/S Front Wing without indicator hole
O/S Front Wing without indicator hole
N/S Inner Front Wing
O/S Inner Front Wing
N/S Full Rear Quarter Panel
Front Passenger Floor Panel as somebody has jacked it up in the wrong place
Full Windscreen Scuttle Panel
O/S Rear Lower Quarter Repair Panel

Already had:

Boot Floor Repair Panel

Subframes and Suspension:

New Front Subframe welded up for more strength
Fully Polybushed
Standard Lengh Trackrod ends
Quickrack from Mini Sport
Group A Adjustable Tie Rods
Rose-Jointed adjustable camber lower arms

New Rear Subframe
DSN Classics Trunnion Kit
New Radius Arms
KAD Handbrake Quadrants
Adjustable Rear Camber

Spax Lowered Dampers
Hi-lows
New Dry Rubber Cones

Brakes:
Mini Sport Paddy Hopkirk 7.5” Cooper S 4 pot Caliper upgrade with Grooved Discs
Mini Sport Superfin Rear Drums
Braided Hoses Throughout

Transmission:
Depends on how much money I have :P

Engine:
Again depends on how much money I have, but at least a Metro Turbo Rebuilt

Wheels & Tyres:
10x4.75” Rose Petal’s Matt Black/Matt Silver
Yokohama 165/70/10 AO32

Then a few more bits later on like fuel pump, master cylinder, brake servo etc etc.

This lot should keep me going for a good few months,

This will be my first mini project so may need some help and if anyone would be willing to lend a hand welding, that would be amazing.

Cheers Guys

Louis

Well, thought i'd update

Just stripping to a complete shell

Bonnet off etc etc, working on the front subframe and engine removal

Posted Image

Then i moved onto interior, managed more or less everything except the steering column and pedal box, any ideas?

Posted Image

That was it for a couple of weeks, then moved onto subby and engine removal,

Got this far and realised something was still attatched, steering column and 1 u clamp on steering rack, that still dosnt want to budge, so stuck at this at the moment

Posted Image

Posted Image

Thats it untill im next off work,

Front end will be being cut off for a full flip front inconjunction with the MiniTec Hinges,

I've ordered a new welder and alot of other bits for the resto,

New N/S rear quarter panel has been ordered and O/S repair section for the rear quarter.

Thanks

Louis

I'd say your progress is excellent compared to some projects, I think planning right from the start makes it easier to keep it going.

Ah so this would be your project then Louis!

Good seeing you today, hope seeing mine helped you a bit. If you need any help in a couple of weeks when your off, just give me a bell during the week.

Looking at the pics more, I reckon it's just a case of getting the steering rack at the right angle and pulling it away to remove the engine, if the U-clamp is stuck, just get a mallet on it, that's what I did.

Look forward to seeing more progress anyways.

Cheers for that Chris i'll be more than likely ringing you up with directions next week for my place lol,

Been off this weekend, and whilst still struggling to get the subframe and engine removed, i havnt done much else,

After seeing Chris's this afternoon, im defo going to be chopping the front off and going with a carbon flip front,

Anyway, here are some of the bad bits that need sorting and welding.

The pics make the car look worse than it is, its all surface rust mainly, except the rear quarter.

Posted Image

This is the drivers side sill, that needs a small peice cutting out and welding back in, easy job!!

Posted Image

This is the drivers rear, and where the previous owner has used fibreglass instead of doing it properly, so that will have to be cut out and new metal welded in.

Posted Image

New rear side quarter needed here, which i have, just need to cut out this one and get to work, does anyone know where i can get the inner cross peice from? if you know what i mean.

(on the inner side of the quarter, where the window seal goes?

Posted Image

This is the bit im talking about, its all rusted through and needs replacing.

Off to MITP tomorrow, nice long trip for me, but hopefully ill get to buy some goodies :)

Cheers guys

ive got no more pics of it on this laptop, il try and find my old one and pm you some.

thats what ive been doing, sold my st and bought my mini with some of the money etc.

Well just got back from MITP, first major show apart from Bingley earlier this year, loved it, good fun to see the minis in action down the strip,

didn't buy as much as i wanted but bought a few things.

Couldn't believe you can even get the magazines at trade prices haha.

Posted Image

First was the Minifins

Posted Image

I bought these next, not too sure why, probably won't use them as im sure there not legal?!?

Posted Image

Then i bought some Lucas MK2 Rear Lamps, brand new and got them at quite a decent price.

I also bought a trigger handbrake from huddersfield spares, but they sold the last one, so placed an order and they will deliver it to me.

Wont be in the garage now untill a week on wednesday, so ill get an update then, as not off work untill then

Cheers

Louis

Looks like some nice buys there Louis. Can't see why you couldn't use the red indicator lenses, Lucas wouldn't produce illegal products, but don't take my word for it though.

See you took my advise and got new mk2 rear lights then ;D
