Well, the day came to deliver the car to the mechanic for new exhaust and it started! I backed out of the driveway, took it down to get some petrol, came back, stopped it to wait for my wife and it wouldn't start again! Gave the crank sensor a really good jiggle and it started right away. Drove it down, explained to the mechanic what happened, he said he'd check it out.

As a precaution he removed the crank sensor and made sure it was clear of oil (it was) and put it back. He poked around a little, didn't really do much else by his own admission, and then kept it for a few weeks, basically waiting for it to not start. But every time he went out to try the car it started first time!

We fetched it earlier in the week, took it home via the CT (French MOT) station (which it passed, no dramas) and it's been fine all week. So none the wiser. Seems sure to have been a loose wire somewhere or something like that, but whatever it was, it's behaving now. O_O

Mustn't grumble...

Run it for a week now, starts first time, every time! I'll bear that in mind if/when it stops again, mind. Thanks!

I know this is an old thread but thanks to all that contributed. I’ve been pulling my hair our on the very same issue and your suggestions really helped. I replaced my fuel pump fuse and suddenly it came alive again. After trying many other things :-(
