re on the balljoints: did you use a balljoint splitter? if not, give that a try, they usually come apart with a bang, but quite easily.

Just a comment on the ball joint breaker, they may only do one thing, but they do that one thing very well, just make sure that you keep the nut on, but loose when you use it.
