I think those marks will be milling cutter marks left after the pistons were surfaced at Cosworths in Wellingborough.....
However an interesting mark has suddenly become visible to me, if yo ulook at the narrowest point of the block on each piston you will see blow by... black soot, now with thos pistons that section of the piston is well below the block deck and a knackered gasket would NOT leave those marks.... but unfortunately a crack will

So in a shorter version it is a new block...

As for cam, the 286 is a very nice all-round high-performance cam so long as you have a well gas-flowed big-valve head and good induction & exhaust systems. That configuration likes high compression and around 10.7:1 is always good when used with 98 RON petrol.
Don't forget you'll need new cam followers and ideally nnew double valve springs.
