I'm slightly surprised that a hairline crack which hardly anyone of us can see would let so much sooty exhaust gas through to mark the pistons in the way mra-minis observes.

The crack is there, had it checked... drops about 1mm over the edge of the bore

The combustion chambers can reach 1000 degrees, this engine was also fitted with NOS injection, so internal pressures coupled with the heat generated in a race engine could have contributed to opening the crack a little more than you can see in the photo.

you can just about make out the crack and sorry to hi-jack this thread but can someone explain what offset boring is and what it actually does?
