Cast iron I assume? Yes, they are damn heavy.

Yep, cast iron, off a terraced house so pretty tall too. As it's only crushed one side of the roof I'm guessing its the very end of the pipe thats hit the car too.

I once got hit on the head with a length of cast iron drain pipe, it fell off my house, well it did kinda get knocked off(which may or may not have been my fault)

Luckily I live in a Bungalow so it didn't have too far to fall, I did have a headache and a huuggeee cartoon style bruise though

Are you sure that he doesn't have the category wrong? My understanding of a Cat A is that he wouldn't realistically be able to repair it, or re-use the parts due to the extent of the damage. Even if he could, with a Cat A he shouldn't have been allowed to retain the wreck in order to do so any way?

Can't say I've ever lifted one so couldn't say, but pretty heavy end to end I'd say, as heavy as a tree of same height? Certainly wouldnt want one to land on me put it that way :D

id say a tree would be wayyy heavier, they are the most solid things going.
the very worst thing you could hit in a car.

Surely that depends on the type of tree?? A "Balsa" tree probably wouldn't do too much damage!!

I think the issue with trees isn't so much how strong or heavy they are themselves, but how well and deeply rooted they are. Therefore if you hit one in a car it simply won't budge and therefore won't absorb or dissipate any of the energy of the impact, meaning that you and your car get it all instead. :(

Nope, I've never even met the guy, he could be whistling out of his bumhole for all I know, or been misinformed himself by the insurance co. Litterally no idea. I'll see if he minds me having a glance at the paperwork he's received from the insurance co, and see if there's any ference to the write-off category in that lot. Will post some pics as well he he doesnt object.

Sure he didn't say it was " A category write-off", not "Category A write-off"... ?

Hmmm. Possibly, but can't see it somehow. My dad (who relayed the message onto me) is a mechanic at an "accident repair centre", taking on purely insurance referalls - can't see him getting so easily confused, but maybe so, he is old now :D

if he still has it, why not tell him to buy a rolling shell from ebay (one that has a legitimate v5) and use his damaged mini as a donor, rebuild the rolling shell into the mini he once had (but with the rolling shell identity) makes sense to me! and keeps everything legal, then that way ,the damaged shell and the v5 from the catagory A write off can be disposed of accordingly

That isn't legal.

Category A write off is the whole car is crushed. That is the shell and all that parts that made up the vehicle in its entirety.

If it was a Category B, what you're saying would be fine as it is only the shell that has been condemned.

If the man has his facts straight I'd be on the phone to the insurance and asking what the hell they are playing at as unless this cast iron pipe was heavy enough to crush the entire car flat then they're having a laugh. Has he had an inspector round to view the damage or have they done it over the phone?

Roof damage on a Mini is highly likely to be cause for a Category B write off because they're difficult to repair. Category A while stationary though, much less likely.
