Might be worth asking the people who live right near to the barn or at the local pub etc if you havent already, someone might have contact details and will probably be able to confirm if the owner is around or not.

Id make sure that the owners dont want it first if you can track them down. My mini has been sat in a barn not moving for a few years now because i dont have the time and money. If i came back to it at somepoint and found someone had claimed it id be pretty annoyed. Also I dont think that claiming the V5 means you actually own the car. If the previous owner finds you with it and has proof that they bought it could they not get it back? I mean the V5 does say not proof of ownership on it.....just a thought.

What have you done to try and contact the owners?

the council could tell you who owns the land.

I think there is a form the DVLA do. You fill in everything you know about the car and DVLA contact the last registered owners on your behalf. If they don't here anything after 'X' amount of time they then let you have a V5 in your name. This is what happens if you wish to claim an abandoned car on a public road, now if the car is on private land it could be different and tresspassing laws may kick in. I would call the DVLA on 0300 790 6802 and tell them your story.

I wouldn't just take it as you could be liable for trespassing and theft lol. Try and ask the local council/ police etc. I doubt the DVLA would divulge who the owner is to you because of data protection *yawn* If you talk to a nice Policeman he may be able to contact the owner on your behalf :D

Let us know the outcome and post some pics up too!

Quite correct, the DVLA contact on your behalf, clubbyestate will never know who owns the car. ;)

regardless of whether or not you feel the car is abandoned, you can never 'just take it' as that is theft. Applying for a V5 without owning the car is also fraud.

be careful.....

If the cars on private land then you're not claiming it, you're stealing it.

No matter how much you want it you just can't take it, it belongs to someone and is not free to take.

We know of an old cooper s sat in an old derelict garage and has been for over 10 years, the owner lives miles away but is well aware of what he has and is leaving it there till someone gives him 10k for it.

I wouldnt presume it was forgotten about
