jenolite is excellent stuff its like jelly

Do they still make the "Jelly" stuff then? All the stuff I've bought in recent years has been a bright pink runny liquid, I did prefer the jelly stuff though.

Bilt Hamber Deox Gel. THE best product i have ever used. Works so well Ive treated every bit of old metal on the car to it when Ive been refurbing parts. Not the cheapest but my god is it the best! Plus a little seems to go a long way. Water soluble and non toxic too. Brilliant, brilliant stuff!

Clings to any surface no matter what the angle and for really bad rust you can wrap it in cling film for up to 24hrs to really work its magic. One thing I would say is dont put it on for say an hour and forget about it....it will be dried on in that time and its almost impossible to get off again to leave a smooth surface.....thankfully I found this out on something you will never see on my car but still......

Has anyone used Dinitrol?

I do believe it is more or a prevention then a treatment. . .

If you don't need the stuff to stick (as in derusting vertical services) then phosphoric acid is cheap at about £4 a litre. Trouble is nobody seems to know how much to dilute it by for the best results.

Thought I'd use this thread instead of starting another.

I've stripped my van back to metal and its already starting to get surface rust on it.

Is this stuff ok to paint over large areas of metal or is it just localised stuff?

Thank you please.

jenolite is rather expensive, the deox gel from bilt hamber is cheaper and a lot of people use them on classics and rally cars..

Sometimes i put it in a 50% solution in distillated water, seems to react better..

Phosphoric acid will be the active ingredient in most, if not all, of these rust converters. Yes you can paint over it, but sand/grind off as much rust as you can before applying it and rinse & dry before priming.

Thought I'd bring this thread up again as I am unsure as what to buy really.

I want something to PREVENT rust not just to treat it..
It has to be able to be primed over

Cheers for any help :D

Preventing rust is done by stopping thr electron flow, hence a coating. There is not much more to it than that. The cleaner and more uniform the surface the better the coating adhesion. Hence phosphate treatments and degreasing before painting.

The best coatings are those that are strong and malleable hence zinc and then on to paint which is strong but less flexible and brittle (chips). As with all coatings the hard bits to get to are the most important!

An article which is good in my opinion is:
