So tomorrow there will be one of the biggest strikes this country has seen due to the govenrment not wanting to talk or listen to peoples wants..they will not back down to the strikers...NO WAY... and you think that by us signing ANOTHER one of these petitions you can make a difference...if you really want to make a difference then place your energys into something that will help your local comunity and feel much better about yourself...you may already do that of course..If so BRAVO...I don't expect for a second that it will go anywhere, but if enough people sign it, it'll at least show that classic car owners have a voice. I'm always surprised at the negative reaction these petitions get, there was me thinking people didn't like getting shafted with tax hikes on everything, even a little discount on cars over 30 years would show us that the government acknowledges us..

I would sign it if it ever had a chance of happening.
Never going to happen I'm afraid.

As an OAP I would love a higher pension, not to have it held back so that classic car owners can save on the road tax for their second cars. I have a good pension, that I'll admit, but many my age can bearly afford to stay warm and fed, so why should we classic car owners have the cheek to ask for free road tax for our 'toys', for that is what they are, in the main. I'm not just talking Minis here, I'm talking classic cars built since 1973. That includes such cars as the Porsche 911 Carrera (cost around £200,000 these days), Rolls Silver Shadow, Mercedes 450 and 500 SL, Jaguar V12 E-Type, etc, etc. Would you want to pay higher taxes in other areas so that the owners of these cars could have free road tax? Would you? Really? I certainly wouldn't.
Come on, let's have some common sense here and some reality.

It’s all well and good wanting minis to be tax exempt, but the only way I could ever see it happening is if the government gives with one hand but takes away with the other. What’s to say because of a vehicle now having classic status by having free road tax that your then limited by how you use it. Say for instance stopping you from using it as a run a round and limiting your annual mileage or even classic free zones like town centres.

At the moment it should NOT happen. The country needs all the revenues it can get, so why should a minority have their luxury items subsidised by the ordinary taxpayers who can't afford a classic car?

That's a pretty big point to introduce! I could say don't replace trident and public sector pensions should be slashed as there is no gap between private and public pay anymore but I'd be missing the point. Life goes on....

It's a very selfish request and pays no heed to the realities of life. If people with enough cash to afford a classic can't afford the road tax, then SORN them until they can, but don't ask the 'have-nots' to subsidise them. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but it's totally unrealistic.
If you use the argument that these classics do little miles, the next argument will be people with second/holiday homes asking to pay no council tax on them because they aren't used much either
I'm just watching the projected borrowing costs for the next few years and some are asking for a 'free hand out' to help run their 'toys'. Absolute nonsense.

I just don't see how a classic car owner can, effectively, say "I've bought a 1974 Porsche 911 for £100,000 and I think my road tax should be free". Change the words 'Porsche 911' and '£100,000', for any other classic car/value. It could be an MGB at £10,000, an E-Type at £30,000, an Escort RS 1600 at £20,000 and so on. What gives the owners of such cars the right to ask for no road tax charge when this country has a huge financial deficit?

So do you agree with teachers striking tomorrow? Private sector primary school teachers generally get paid less than their public counterparts. It all gets very complicated and one man's wants are different from anothers. Road tax was meant to be related to the roads but ultimately it's stupid and should be on fuel instead.
Just like NI (employers and employees) and VAT should be on income tax but if we did that the massess would be up in arms because their headline tax rate was too high even though it is.
If someone wants to sign the pertition then that's okay...have a look at some of the other e-petitions....crazy stuff....
