But the thing is the porche IS in the game - just under RUF - Strictly speaking, they could get the copyright for a works cooper from anyone like britax, or JCW! Then users can just paint it however they want!

No, RUF is a RUF, Porsche is Porsche. They're two completely different companies and the copyright for RUF sports cars isnt owned by anybody other than RUF. Project Gotham had the right to the RUF name a few years ago and they left it open for others to still use the RUF name and shape for the RGT 8.

The Porsche name and shape is an international affair, so many people are involved in the Porsche company that it becomes too complicated... a lot more complicated than 'RUF being Porsche'.


The works Coopers were Austin or Morris, which are both names OWNED under the Mini trademark by AG BMW... like the SHAPE of the Mini. Britax or any other company in your list own any rights to the Mini name or shape they just tuned them. Adding a Mini in special colours or coachworks that was never registered or sold through a BMC dealership doesnt mean its void to BMC (BMW AG) patents

In the same way JCW own NOTHING to do with the name or shape of the Mini... they just TUNE MINI's.

It's a dodgy one - RUF use unmarked porche chassis and bodies, so where do you draw the line between who owns the shape, as on the outide, they're 98% identical. Due to it being almost identical, but not fully - they dont require permission to release their cars for games from porche.

So, the also slightly identical kits for a mini, such as the ABS fibreglass body, with extended front, smoothed ect, wouldn't require liscense from Mini, or any of the shape, trademark holders. This is how codemasters got around the liscensing issue with the old Colin Macrae rally games, and the Dirt series! If you measure proportions in those games, the body is identical up to the front end, where the front, proportionally, has been extended by about 50mm give or take 5! The shell is also deseamed, and slightly taller.

Anyway - microsoft studios used to have permission under liscense to use the mini, as they included it in one of the Rallisport games a few years back!

But RUF sportscars are not a 'Porsce', they are a 'RUF'. All of the companys that still produce Minis different from the way longbridge did went down a long time ago... Minus cars for example, they're a 'Mini Minus' and tonnes of others.

The Mini Marcos was used in Gran Turismo 4 because it was a shape that, at the time, nobody held the copyright too. BMW AG own it now though.

The problem with the classic Mini is that the shape is so iconic, anybody looks at a mini, whether its been made to look funny or not, and they know its a Mini. You can add 30cm to the front and give it a rear splitter, call it what you like in the game too... its still a Mini.

Licencing issues are a pain. I dont expect to see a classic mini in Forza 4, I was just hoping.
