Try over preparing, doing so much research on a mini that you get your shiny new SPI and keep pulling the heater knob out before you start it up.
I have learnt much since!!!

Its a tool to flood your engine with fuel, like a BOOST button for who does not really know a thing about engines.

Handbag holder?
I heard a story from my dad, this ladies mini wasn't running right when it was warm, she took it to a mechanic and was told that the car was running rough because she was using the choke to hold her handbag!

That sounds like my choke lolI thought it was for keeping wooden clothes pegs on
so what is the choke for again?
(Some of you may understand what I mean)
