I heard that a Chinese company actually own the rights to the original mini read this in mini world recently.

But they have no plans to reproduce the car :(

i thought BMW purchased 'mini' so i would have thought they own the rights to the original? and lets be honsest why would you produce the old mini now, its hardly cutting edge and its got more than its fair share of problems. its a great car but its had its day. maybe if they were still making them they would lose abit of there coolness.

‘Mini’ and ‘Cooper’ are trademarks owned by BMW AG, Austin and Morris are trademarks owned by Nanjing Automobile (Group) Corporation. A license agreement is required from British Motor Heritage for the production of ‘Mini’ parts and all uses of the ‘Austin’ and ‘Morris’ trademarks. Applications must be made to BMW AG for a license to use ‘Mini’ or ‘Cooper’ trademarks.

These new Mokes are supplied without engine and therefore are a kit, and will need BIVA, which they will not pass without extensive mods.

But if you have an old rusty or crash damaged Moke, you might get away with "reshelling" it without needung a BIVA. You just need proof (e.g. receipt) that you have purchased a genuine replacement shell, as far as I can see. (The Mini shell you would purchase from Heritage is not exactly the same as a MK3, for instance, but it is the correct replacement, yet not from the original manufacturer/) You would lose points for the engine and gearbox, unless you reuse your old ones, but the suspension, axles and steering are as per original, or Chinese copy thereof.

Completely wrecked or rotten Mokes may be worth something after all! At least if they have a registration document, and are not Cat A writeoffs..

A road worthy Moke with the wrong/fake body is better then a rotten Moke shell imo.

I wouldn't mind one I wouldn't call it original in any way shape or form, But it's almost like a kit car that almost resembles the original... I would have to paint it though, all the colors they offer seem way to neon for me. I actually contacted the manufacturer a couple years back, and got a quote for one CKD shell at around $8,000 or something like that shipped to the US. Someday I will own a moke, it will either be original or chinese, but it will be built up with good parts.

US Choke sales take off
These Chinese Mokes are now legal in all 50 US States and EPA exempt........imported and on sale by Bill Cox of 'Monte Carlo Minis' who builds them up in his workshop in the USA, he has sold 20 new Mokes so far and currently has 10 more in stock, bare shells are also available.

$20,000 for a new shell... Twenty thousand dollars... TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS. And it's not even a real one. I contacted the manufacturer a few years back and got a price of like 7,000 or 8,000 fob for a shell, That's train robbery there in North Carolina...
