One day in the not to distant future when Mini's are much harder to find and future enthusiasts can only build them up from a new Heritage shell (by then there will be new Mk1-2 shells available) there will be no doubt be some regrets at the loss of spare early V5 log books from old scrap Mini's that were not stolen but had useful Mk1/2 ID's to live again. I know many may not agree but the loss of any Mini is bad news when every year many more are getting written off impounded by insurance companies for minor damage because its now the 'law' to confiscate and send them for scrap......... :(

Until you know the true history of a log book I think reporting it is a silly thing to do. You're killing the Mini in a strange little the way...

well "ringing" is only really a problem when its done for illegal purposes ie selling on a stolen shell, (obv its always illegal). but thats the reason why its been made illegal to make stealing and selling on stolen cars harder.

Incidentally its actually not a problem if you were to buy a brand new heritage shell and put that registration on it i thought? I was under the impression that its only illegal if you are putting an id from another car onto a shell that has already been issued a VIN? Or am i barking up the wrong tree here?

you would still need to score 8 points on the DVLA system

5 points for the new shell

where will you get the other 3 points ?

in my eyes people will go to great lengths to steal a car and put another id on it, you aint going to stop it happening

Personally i think its all about the free tax on your mini, if the tax free was dropped log books wouldnt be for sale at the price they are and people wouldnt be that interested in them.

and i bet loads of people on here would put an id on their car for the tax saving

There are loads of genuine reasons to do illegal things but it doesn't change the fact it's illegal.

like simplyminis said, if they abolished free road tax for pre 73 registered cars then a lot of this illegal logbook business would stop because there would be no gain or advantage in having a pre 1973 car or logbook anymore.
i bet that out of all the mini's that have pre 73 registration numbers....less than 1/2 of them are original cars or have the correct type of bodyshell to match the particular year of registration.
