The other issue relates to the electric power steering pump melting a piece of wiring (happened to the wife's car), also occurring mainly while parked. In some cases this has caused fires too.
Happened to my mums car in away, didn't catch fire but the power steering would just fail at times leaving it so difficult to steer and it was dangerous when it cut out round a roundabout then all of a sudden kicked and she nearly hit the inside of the roundabout.
The original Mk1 (2001-2006) Mk1 MINI 'electro-hydraulic power steering pump' with the distictive whine was specified by Rover engineers because it gives excellent direct steering feel for the 'Go-Kart' character they wished to retain from the classic Mini as far as possible. The fully electric power steering now used on the Mk2 MINI was not so advanced in 2001 when the Mk1 was developed and did not give the required 'sporting feel' and feedback required by Rover at the time.
