The other issue relates to the electric power steering pump melting a piece of wiring (happened to the wife's car), also occurring mainly while parked. In some cases this has caused fires too.

Happened to my mums car in away, didn't catch fire but the power steering would just fail at times leaving it so difficult to steer and it was dangerous when it cut out round a roundabout then all of a sudden kicked and she nearly hit the inside of the roundabout.

The original Mk1 (2001-2006) Mk1 MINI 'electro-hydraulic power steering pump' with the distictive whine was specified by Rover engineers because it gives excellent direct steering feel for the 'Go-Kart' character they wished to retain from the classic Mini as far as possible. The fully electric power steering now used on the Mk2 MINI was not so advanced in 2001 when the Mk1 was developed and did not give the required 'sporting feel' and feedback required by Rover at the time.
If yours does fail it is a fairly easy DIY job to replace the EHPS pump, detailed in MCR forum link below:

Yeah me and my dad fit another one, didn't take long at all!

More than just the floor mats according to Toyota website...............

Is was though found to be the cause of the crash in the states that kicked it all off though.

Again the guy driving still should have been able to stop the car and prevent the accident.

Isn't it funny how because there's a problem with a MINI everyones quick to jump on the MINI-bashing bandwagon. If it was any other modern car with the same fault no one would batter and eyelid.

Isn't it about time everyone realised the new MINI is actually a different car to our classics. My mum's MINI had to go in to BMW last year as a petrol line had split as a result of it rubbing against an electrical connector. Thank god she noticed the smell of petrol or it could have been fatal.

Reposted because every classic Mini owner needs to read this.

Seriously, get over it! It's been out for over 10 years for goodness sake!

Same amount of years as the pointless war has been going on. People say we should continue the war some say we shouldnt, its an opinion and even though some peoples opinions are wild and stupid we have to accepet that. People will continue to troll on about the BINI. Learn to ignore those people who post stupid posts yeah.

Those crictics of the bini dont realise without that publicity, the classic mini wouldnt be on a wild scale as it is now. Dont you see how much publicity the classic mini gets beside the BMW mini. There has been many adverts and the WRC promotion of both minis together. Dont see fiat doing this with the 500 do you?

Just to add, its not like BMW have completely ignore the classic mini or slated it. They always praise the old classic. Its only the some of th DRIVERS who give the bad name to it.

We should appreiciate a big manufacture such as BMW took great interest in the mini and didnt just do a one of. Like fellow manufacture Fiat have done.

But I understand why people moan and complain about the war, because it's a serious issue and lives are at stake. It's a very serious political debate and will always be controversial.

Whereas the BMW Mini is just a car. If you don't like it then don't buy one. It won't affect your classic Mini, apart from perhaps increasing its value.
