But the data originally comes form the DVLA. One of the ways the government makes money is by selling the database to interested parties. Same with the post office and your address and postcode.

Yes that's what I was getting at. I wasn't actually serious about Halfords compiling the data by having spotty youths stood at the doors of their stores writing down the make, model and registration numbers of their customers cars!!

i dont know why but that sounds a little dodgey.

Something the government does to make money sounds dodgy!! Surely Not?? :P

If you're injured in a road accident, they also sell the details you give to the Police to "No win No fee" solicitors so that legal firms can make money out of encouraging you to make compensation claims. Now if anybody else did that sort of thing, it would be considered a breach of the data protection act, but the government can do whatever they like. The irony is that the government now have the nerve to want to pass legislation preventing people from pursuing whiplash claims, because the surge in compensation claims is pushing insurance premiums up and making them unaffordable!! >_<

The insurance companies are far from blameless either. They do exactly the same, sell your details to 'Ambulance Chasers' and claim their lucrative ‘referral’ fee. You'll find it in the small print under 'allowing them to disclose information to third parties' Then they have the cheek to put up premiums and blame the number of personal injury claims. It's about time the ABI banned this practice.

Rant over...

To keep on topic.... WBAC offerered me £223.50 lol. Funny that seeing as I've got it insured at a value of £2k

Their £49.99 admin fee is a joke. When else do you have to pay someone a fee for the pleasure of them buying your car?

Well, They've just bought my mondeo, with the fee I've ended up with £350 more than I was offered trading in against my new car.

Yeah, I could've got more money if I'd sold it privately, but I'd have to pay to advertise, wait in for people who may not turn up, and although they wouldn't get a warranty with a private sale, they'd know where I lived!

I also knew what was wrong with the car! They didn't test drive it or anything!

Only down side is I have to wait until Thursday for the bank transfer!

So, yeah, they aren't any good for selling your minis, but they were good for my every day run of the mill mondeo!

Errmmm no.

You pay the auctioneers a fee for them selling the car for you. You do not pay a fee to the person buying the car.

Not really. You are paying the auctioneer for their services in trying to sell the car. Much the same as paying for an advert in autotrader or on E bay. You are paying for them to help you find a buyer, and with autotrader and e bay also you still have to pay some of the fees if the car doesn't sell.

Whereas webuyanycar.com are actually the people buying the car from you, and they expect you to pay them a fee just because they are buying your car. It's like you putting the car in autotrader, having someone come round and agree to buy it, and then demanding a fee from you just because they want to buy your car.

The admin fee is just part of their marketing ploy. Really what WBAC are saying is that they'll buy any car from 1p to £100k. That wouldn't sound very good in their adverts though, so buy putting in the £49.99 as an admin fee, they can say "we buy any car from £50 to £100k".

The government does not sell your details to any solicitors, that is what the insurance company do. The government is trying to stamp this practice out which I think is fairly pointless - the fee that the insurance company receives can only offset our insurance premiums, and let's be honest, people will still claim for whiplash because there's enough adverts on the telly for no-win-no-fee solicitors. IMO the practice that needs stamping out is the Police making a profit out of road accidents by selling the details to OnTime recovery. When I had my accident last year they were very upset about me using my own recovery, which I think is just wrong. They don't even ask you if you have breakdown cover.
