I've been ordering some body panels and as I trawled various sites, it became apparent that you could buy pretty much everything you'd need to build a Mini from scratch.

So my question, just out of curiosity, is how much would it cost to do that and has anyone ever actually done it?

Buying everything new I would hazzard a guess at £15,000 for a 'new' classic. But, even that might be optimistic!

Depends how far you go and what you do with it, most mini's you see on the front of miniworld started as a little restore then turn out to be some sort of monster haha

well you can buy a brand new shell for like £5,500 so thats a good bit of the work done straight away. can you get brand spanking new engines though?

You can get new mpi engines.

I think 15k as a minimum for all new parts. All those little bits soon add up.

my 're-build' of a Mk2 which has in all reality become more like a 'new build' of a Mk2 adds up to around £9000.00 at the moment.....

so far we have a re-maufactured shell ( slightly cheaper than a heritage shell but at least its a mk2 )
front and rear subframes fully built up
braking system fully built up and partially installed
steering
loom and all lights, switches, and ancillaries
wiper motor and stalks, steering column and cowl
engine partially built
whole bunch of final trim pieces in the cabinet - door handles, locks, wiper bezels etc.
glass and rubbers

yet to do:
paint
final assembly
interior including dash, door cards, rear inserts etc etc
finalise engine and install
audio
alarm
spots and indicators
window fittings and chrome bits
tax and test
it looks like the final price for a fully built, fully trimmed mini with a decent engine is around £14,000.00 but that's with every single component brand new except for the roof, engine block, and a few bits that have been reconditioned to the state of being like new - steering arms for example. It could have been a lot more, and I guess I could have saved a bundle on certain things.

Dig-mini over on the 16v mini site built a shell out of panels. Including a spot welder I think it cost him about £2500 to build the shell. The shell was to re-shell a vehicle though so most of the parts can be transferred from the old one. His is also using an Allspeed frame and will have a Vauxhall engine.
