did you try lifting it near the waterpump/ thermostat housing by any chance with these bars and split them? or tried forcing them between head and block causing damage to mating surfaces???

Doing a compression test will take 10 minutes and will rule out or confirm a lot of possibilities!

Did wedge between water pump and stat at first, then he use the crowbar on the block/head for more purchase. Not good!
Ran it again today. Did a few more miles and was even brave enough to go to the petrol station! No overheats. Feels slightly hesitant, but this might be to do with the newer (standard) rockers, rather than the old loosey goosey ones. Still a bit of thin mayo (more like single cream now), but I think this is due to the damp weather, and probably any coolant that made it's way into oil passages during the gasket change.
Gonna go do a compression test now, just to be sure. Fingers crossed!

Didn't manage to get a compression test done. Borrowed the tester, but didn't have the jump leads the Haynes manual said I'd need to disable the ignition. Didn't think I'd need to, but wasn't about to take the change 3 weeks after fitting a new coil.
I checked the torque on the head nuts, and found the ones on the rockers to be fine, but the 5 at the front of the block took a quarter turn to get up to correct torque! Not sure how much difference this has made, but my coolant has stopped disappearing (did a back flush too).
After a rather cautious run up the motorway to Salford, the mayo has disappeared to

I've come to the conclusion that there was probably an air lock/blockage or two, possible coupled with the out-of-torque nuts causing an overall panic that the head had gone again. It now runs beautifully, and even got up to 90 on my private motorway without any fuss

Thanks very much to all for the advice
