This is the engine for my restoration 'retro' Cooper 'S'.

The block and crank are just back from Minisport. The block was cleaned, the oilways flushed then new cam bearing fitted and a rebore to +20.

The main bearing journals were in great condition and polished up at standard size. Two of the big ends were badly worn so they journals are now ground to -10.

Pistons are on back order. More photos when I get started building.

I've built a few 1071 'S' engines. Very smooth compared to the 1275.
The last one I built for a car of mine had a 649 cam, MiniSport race head, LCB, Twin H4 carbs, Aldon dizzy, 11:1 C.R., etc.
It won its class on the Belgian Historic International Rally and got 7th overall. My great buddy Bill who lives in Los Angeles now owns the car. Here it is:

How comes you got the block bored without the pistons ?

Should it not be bored machine to match the pistons ?

Your 1071 'S' look terrific. Mine is a Morris and will be red with white roof. 77bhp at wheels sounds good, looking forward to driving a Mini again after such a long time.

Minisport really do know their Mini's. The machine shop is wall to wall Mini heads cranks and blocks. Most would have ground all seven journals on my crank but they carefully measured mine and recommended just polishing the mains as they were in great condition.

I will PM you details of the costs.

Looks fantastic, reminds me of my Mk1. This is what I am aiming for (but of course it will have wind up windows).

So they've forgiven you and you won't be throwing your car in the sea? :mrcool:

Wow, that was a long time ago.

Yes after many years Brian forgave me for catching him by two minutes and passing him on the 'long one' and we made up - but you are mixing your metaphors. The 'if you catch me I will throw my car into the sea' quote was directed at someone else whose name escapes me at the moment but I will look it up.

i know where there is a complete 1071 cooper s car, its at the rear of a garden in a lean-to of a guy who my mom bought a camper van from, got a great personal reg 24 PEA lol he said if he ever decides to sell it, ill have 1st refusal ;) i also know of a 970 s engine and running gear from a crashed rally car, but thats a different story :)

looks like a great little engine, love the work done on it, will compliment any mini it goes into!

The gears dismantled and cleaned. The casing is a 22G190 and the Laygear is a 22G204 which makes it the 1071 hybrid box with 'A' type gears and 'B' type 1st and reverse. The layshaft is by far the weak point in the 3 synchro box - this one is badly worn, hope I can get a new one.

At last I am making some progress. I've had the gearbox casing chemically cleaned - it was in a really bad state having stood for nearly 30 years with a mixture of water and Castrol 'R' in it.

I managed to find a brand new (very expensive) 3rh / 4th synchroniser as the original was badly worn.
