Nice, done a 998 build myself recently, spec is:
self ported 12g940
Hif44 with ITG ramair kit
Kent 276
Minispares UL fly and backplate
Megajolt
Fletcher exhaust

not had it properly set up on the rollers yet, going on 17th Nov

37mm inlets sound nice! Cam wise, my 276 I find a bit too much for a small bore, not really much below 2000rpm but may be due to the fact it aint setup 100%, next engine build Im going to use a 266 for all round smoothness

Hif44 seems to do well on mine and the ITG kit makes it sound very nice, induction roar is amazing

good luck, will be following

i've been waiting for the results of this engine for ages philip.....:-).......the 266 in a really nice cam for the small bore, i used a 266 in my 1098 and it gave 60bhp@the wheels.

Ok so here is the flywheel bolt that has been removed with a chisel. I'm fitting a new bolt with and new key plate and lock washer.

Philip,

Looking good. One question - did the mains cap bolts come with the block or did you get these made up?

That's how they came in 1963 when this engine was made. I think all 'A' series engines originally had this set up but it was changed to studs and nuts at some point for additional strength. The torque setting for the bolts is slightly higher than the later type with nuts.

No I have not started a build thread on the shell. I will start the thread when the shell is painted, but don't get too excited, it's a new Mk4 shell I'm using.

Hi Scott, this is the first time I have been on the mini forum in well over a year, amazingly only four days after you ask for an update.

Afraid I was finding all the arguing and point scoring very tiresome so decided to give it a miss.

Situation with the car is that it is almost complete, just needs the rear screen fitted and the internal trim and carpets.

I went all out and just about everything on it is new. It's a Mk4 shell but I went for the retro look - Mk1 rear lights and grill, Morris Cooper 'S' badges, twin tanks and Minilite wheels.

I've driven it along to the end of the drive and back a couple of times - the 1071 engine sounds great and the 'box works fine. The brakes feel a bit spongy but the discs and pads are all brand new so need some bedding in.

Hoping to take it for the M.O.T. test later this month but as the weather over here will be getting pretty cold and wet soon I will probably wait till next spring before I manage to put some decent miles on the clock.

Have you made any progress with your 1071 ?

Chris.

So slow Chris it is a shame.

190 gearbox done and saving for a cam and timing gears.

The coachwork may to some a big deal but i've been a panel beater all my life.

It will be mine to drive but now I have my son in engineering school.

Good news is sourced every bit of a red/gold brocade original interior and people are beating my door for lots of the spares.

Take care and good luck on your special build.

Scott

Great to see such a rare engine and gear box being put back together and going to get used. My mate had a 970S engine in the mid 80's and to be honest it was a bit tiresome on the road all the power too far up the rev range and not enough low down torque (we probably over camed it in the pursuit of power and revs, but we were young). It would be worth a fortune now!, good luck with the MOT.
