At last I can get started on the engine. I had installed the pistons but when at TDC they were protruding 0.030" out of the top of the block which must have been skimmed in a previous life. I know 30 thou is not much but I did not want to take any chances so I removed them and had them machined down.

Being an old Cooper 'S' block it has the 3 bolt fixing for the oil pump, but as I am changing to a slot drive camshaft I also need to change to a 2 bolt oil pump. One of the holes is common to both types, but the other one has to be drilled and tapped. Even managed to find my old 1/4 UNF tap.

The newer pump has a larger diameter impeller, but narrower.

This is the original 1071'S' flywheel which uses springs instead of the later diaphragm. I'm sure I remember fitting a diaphragm to one of these flywheels a long time ago, but for this engine I have gone for a new flywheel instead.

This is the new ultralight flywheel at 4028 grams, with the original 1071 22A539 pressure plate re-surfaced at 2060 grams and an AP Racing fast road clutch plate and orange cover.

Ayeup mate, looking very nice, wondering what the final spec for the engine will be? Looking a nice build

Thanks mate, it's taking a long time but I want to do it right. The cam is a 286 and the head is a much modified 12G940 with 37mm inlets and 29mm exhausts. I will be fitting a single HIF44 and Maniflow LCB. Don't know what power to expect but these engines safely rev to well over 7000 so it should be fun to drive.

Nice, done a 998 build myself recently, spec is:
self ported 12g940
Hif44 with ITG ramair kit
Kent 276
Minispares UL fly and backplate
Megajolt
Fletcher exhaust

not had it properly set up on the rollers yet, going on 17th Nov

37mm inlets sound nice! Cam wise, my 276 I find a bit too much for a small bore, not really much below 2000rpm but may be due to the fact it aint setup 100%, next engine build Im going to use a 266 for all round smoothness

Hif44 seems to do well on mine and the ITG kit makes it sound very nice, induction roar is amazing

good luck, will be following

The flywheel bolt had been removed with a chisel by someone in the past so I am fitting a new one with a new locking plate and washer.

Oops, photobucket not playing, so photo to follow!
