When I removed my roof and replaced it with a another steel one, the top section of the car was VERY flimsy!
Alot of the strength did seem to be in the outer lip of the roof, but where the old roof skin was bonded on there was a hell of alot of rot.
Unless the roof is creased, my advice would be to get a bodyshop to beat the dents out. If your on a budget, you could always knock them out the best you can, then providing there not too deep, use some high build filler primer and flat them out that way.

Use sikaflex to bond the roof on and it will also seal against any flooding into the cab. I'd say if the roof is dinged the best thing to do is go the way of fibreglass or carbon. On the plus side it'll never rot :)

looking at this as a replacement to fit on mine as its rotten around most of the panel fold where the gutter is welded on. just trying to work out ho to fit it with no lip to leave to bond to.

Why not fit a steel one?
All you need is a grinder and a spot welder, there actually fairly easy to fit. In fact that was the first panel i'd ever replaced. lol

I'd assume, finding a replacement is quite difficult.

You can buy the panels new, M-Machine do them.
I cut mine off and old shell and reused it though. It took a bit more time to clean the edges up for welding but saved alot of money not buying new.
