It seems to me that every year there are water shortages, drought warnings and hosepipe ban threats, despite the fact that it always seems to be raining in this country!! My Father works in the water industry and every time I put this to him (usually just after the latest down pour), he gets quite annoyed and explains that the sudden downpour really won't help matters "because it's the wrong type of rain!"....

Apparently we need constant drizzling rain, that will slowly soak into the water table. Sudden downpours just create "surface run off water", that flows straight into the drain/sewer network, then into the major rivers and out to sea. But that doesn't stop me from having to retort each time with "Oh sorry Dad, it seemed like the wet sort of rain to me, had I known it was that dry sort of rain then I wouldn't have mentioned it!"

Hmmmm I think I'll give him a ring to see what he makes of the hose pipe ban, despite the fact it's been raining here for the last couple of days..... :P

When a country like spain doesn't have hosepipe bans and 1/4 of the annual rainfall....

The answer is because our country on the whole wastes water like nobody else haha

You're kidding!!.... 90% of the Costa Del Sol is populated by tea swilling Brits, the only thing they consume even more of are Full English Breakfasts!!

Plus they clearly have "the right sort of rain" over there... ....according to my Dad anyway!! :P

I work in the water industry for a company that contract to pretty much every water company. a huge amount of it comes down to the condition of the water mains, for example Thames water lose more water through leakage every year than welsh water use.

A 80% of my work is network logging to help reduce pressure and bring down leakage.

I studied River and Coastal Engineering for 2 years before switching to Civil Engineering, so don't get me started on rain.

However for me this is fantastic news, my dissertation is a rain water harvesting project (think many enormous water butts) so it means my project is very viable.

Silver linings and all that...
