I'm considering making and fitting a removable isofix system which will bolt into the rear seatbelt mounts

I would imagine there is a huge amount of legislation and testing involved in that!

To be fair, the child will probably be 18 by the time the mini is done!

Food for thought though

I've done a little bit of research on this and Ford sell a kit to retro-fit into some of their cars. Also, people have made kits to fit it into others.

My thoughts were to make a bar which goes onto both the lower mounting points, (these are designed for a seat belt) and this would have the isofix loops on.

Obviously it's a bit of a funny shape, and I'd have to get around that.

That's got to be safer for all involved than what some people may do, having someone in the back un-restrained.

BUT, there may be legislation stopping me from doing it!

Initially you need to make sure you have 3 point seat belts. Every front facing seat needs 3 point inertia belts. Otherwise it's baby on the front seat, partner in the back.

I used the type that just fits with seat belts and found it very secure. Yours has nice metal in the right places so I would think you will be fine mate, but would still be interested to see if the Isofix thing works. When we were looking at seats the Isofix ones were VERY expensive though.

I'm currently trawling ebay for familyfix bases, my sister is giving me the first seat which will be good for the first year!

M&P, that's Mamas and Papa's not me....used to do an seatbelt based isofix base, which sounds a bit weird but worked well for fixed length belts, but needed a second mortgage to pay for all of the bits, don't seem to do it anymore.

We just bungee cord our's to the roof rack these days, next to the picnic hamper and crate of fosters.

I've got a britax jet eclipse, that can be used with lap straps as well as 3 points.  Its also got a smaller base as well, that works well in a mini.

Frankly I'm utterly sickened by this comment. I cannot believe that anyone would even joke about doing such a blatantly irresponsible, completely stupid and downright dangerous thing as putting them on the roof!. Ultimately we are talking about the sheer neglect of what is the most loved and cherished things known to mankind here...........

.....your lagers!

Great thread. Really interested myself if you can retro fit isofix mountings. Planning to take my young son in my mini when its done so would like to know what options are available.

There is another thread in the technical area that goes into more detail.

I can't see how an oldy is a thing to be worried about. I have had both my kids in the back of my landcrab since they were old enough to travel and the kid seats we have have kept them safe from harm (except from their crazy dad in they old car). You just need too remember to drive like you are carrying the most precious thing in the world, because you are, you are carrying the future.

Its every other idiot on the road that's the problem!

I know we were all carried in cars without seat belts etc but there is a lot more traffic on the road these days and people are distracted by phones and sat navs etc.

Why not use a system that makes things as safe as possible?
