about an hour ago i got back from a 30 minute walk and then a 3/4 mile jog.

i know this doesnt sound like much but i havnt done any exercise, other than the horizontal variety since school.

i have set myself the challenge of doing the birmingham 1/2 marathon on the 21st october. ambitious i know, but i like challenges, and this should be a good one!

Just be careful, if running on concrete get some good shock absorbing trainers. I unfortunately cannot jog any more at 29 due to shin splints. Gutted because once you get into it it's awesome! Took up cycling to combat though and just as awesome!

Not so much at the moment because you are just getting into, but remember rest days are just as important to improve fitness as running. If you don't give your body chance to fully recover you'll get tired.

It won't be long and you'll not need to do the walking or certainly a lot less. At the very start, you can gain ability to keep running quite quickly. A lot of it is a mental thing though. You can push your body further than you realise.

So you have the Nike + trainers or whatever they are that can talk to an iPod/iPhone? You can record all your run data and upload to a computer or the net and analyse it all.

I quite like running but I don't do it enough. I use it as an aid to my rowing but I can't run long distances because I always end up running really quickly haha. I always end up just running really fast for 30 minutes straight. I think that maybe being 6'4" with really long legs and the fact that I love running to ACDC etc might have something to do with it haha

Saying that, I am now toying with the idea of doing the marathon next year... It'll take a lot of determination and I'd probably think it was a terrible idea when I'm laying on the floor afterwards haha

If you can jog 3/4 a mile you're way ahead of most people! I start people with 1 min jog intervals with 2 mins walk between and that's hard work for many of them!

Hopefully your new trainers came with a gait analysis to keep you problem free!

Everyones legs and feet are biomechanically different. A good running shop, not Sports Direct etc., will watch you run and see how your feet strike and roll. You can then buy trainers that work with the way you run, rather than against.

Steve I'll check the diary :D That's only a month away though!
