Everyones legs and feet are biomechanically different. A good running shop, not Sports Direct etc., will watch you run and see how your feet strike and roll. You can then buy trainers that work with the way you run, rather than against.

Steve I'll check the diary :D That's only a month away though!

I've never been able to run distance, 100/200m i'm like a grey hound but after that I die. That matter BC?

im not big into running. i started uni in september and i noticed that as i wasn't doing the 9 hours a week training for rugby and hockey that i was in 6th form my beer belly is growing. i dug out my summer shorts the other day and was not pleased with what i discovered. i would recommend buying buying a mag like mens health (dont worry no ones going to think your gay) and try getting pumped up about fitnes. i find that generally i loose momentum as i hate running and only feel good when i get back. i generally run 3 miles 3 times a week.

its probably worth also knowing that not just running will help you loose weight doing weights and anaerobic exercise will increase your metabolism and help keep the weight at bay.(thats the only reason i do any)

i run cross country and can quite easily do 8 miles in an hour.

im meant to be doing the birmingham half marathon.

im due to see a specialist in the morning regarding my knee, ive slightly torn my ACL so ive been completely inactive for the past 4weeks.

no climbing/running = bored as ****

edit to add,
im really geeky with my running i use a garmin forerunner 305 with a HR monitor.
it tells you your pace, HR, distance all sorts.

you can even load training programs onto it.

I did 130 miles in 4 days for the dofe gold award easily,, was such an achievement, wish I could go jogging, but somehow fail at it, I can walk for miles, but I can hardly do long distance jogging, really wish I could lol :(

In terms of trainers, no not really. From an athletics perspective anyway. On the track, sprint spikes have a full spike plate underneath, meaning the sole is quite rigid anyway. The way you run in a sprint is very different from distance. The issues with gait don't really have a chance to come in to it as the legs are so flexed and the duration so short.

That said, the spikes I run track 3, 5 and 10kms in don't have much to them either, but rely on being a mid foot runner really, and I run road races in racing flats. It just depends on your running style really and what you'll get on with. As I'm still on an injury rehab plan, I'm running in my supportive Brooks all the time now, aside the sprints sessions.

If you have the fitness to walk, I'm sure you could build up the jogging ability! Have you tried doing some planned intervals rather than just going out and running A to B?

Maggie: I use a 305 too, fantastic bit of kit. I couldn't train without one now.

Those of you with iPhones et al can use apps like mapmyrun and the nike+ inbuilt one to keep track of your runs, but be mindful about listening to music when out running!

I trained up to do the UKs Hardest Half Marathon (Midsummer Munro) that I did last year, but I've done hardly any running since!

I feel like all that hard work and training has been lost, definitely something I will get back into this summer, I felt so good being out running in the countryside. (I run cross country)

Be good if anyone is the around Melton Mowbray area to have a running partner!

The nhs 'couch to 5k' programme is worth a look for those wishing to get a little bit fitter.
It's an audio step by step plan. Download the mp3 files and follow the instructions. Starts off with really easy walk/run intervals and builds things up gradually. I'd recommend this if you're starting to look like something that's been left out of the fridge all night!

i dont think i could run without my garmin and ipod.

im not going to be out running anytime soon.
the doctor has refered me to a sport injury specialists she now thing s my ligament injury could be cartilage damage.

its painful to walk but sometimes not to run (how very odd).

im getting seriously fed up of looking at these nice evenings and not being able to get out.

i know a fair bit about footwear, it will depend entirely on the kind of running your doing.

Garmin yea but iPod nooooo don't be an iPod jogger!

As well as the nhs program, look up the Run England site if you'd like to find a beginners or imrpovers group. I run a couple here and have 100% success with getting people to a 5k in 10-12 weeks.

We get plenty of people from Melton Mowbray come to our club :D

Back to the school games today, athletics yay, children boo!

Wow, I really need to get out running if you lot think sub 40min isn't that quick! I was planning on doing a 10km this weekend and as I haven't run in ages I was aiming for under an hour. (PB is 48mins, about 3 years ago before I stopped running).

However, I might now have a ticket to L2B and that sounds more tempting ;-)

EDIT:
P.S Used to be an iPod jogger, but this week I've been running without headphones in - it's great! Plus, I can concentrate on a steady pace rather than running to the music >_<

I have been going to the gym three times a week for the last 5 years, do a fairly active job and cycle to and from work as well. I'm still really unfit though and still get out of breath running up the stairs!!

I'm supposed to be cycling from Cambridge to London in a couple of weeks too.........it's been nice knowing you all!!
