Its pefectly possible to hand hone, Thats how all my engines have ever been finished. You do need to check sizes as you go.

Right, the engine's being pulled!!!
Did I read here somewhere that it's possible to remove the block, leaving the gearbox in situ?

Yes buts its a huge amount of effort and would take longer than removing the thing as a whole.

i took the engine block off the box when i took my old engine out, mainly because i couldn't get hold of the engine lift when i needed to take the engine out, it took about 40 minutes to split the block from the box and lift the engine out on my own.

those bores dont look as if they have been honed at all....i'm not surprised that the rings wouldn't seal, looks like a strip down job unfortunately.

Turn it by hand 'n see if it makes any impression on the oil on the cylinders.

that apears cattle trucked it apears that you have had some ring break up looking at one of those pistons. next to waterpump. the oil useage must have been terrible too
