Check out this listing:

It is listed as an MPi engine, however, from the pictures it is clearly an SPi motor. But the oddest thing of all is that in the description it states "Here we have for sale a complete engine for classic mini, complete with carb, manifolds, air box, starter and alternator" A carb on an injection engine? Bah.

I had to send him a message...

"I do not want to buy this engine, but as the listing is providing false data I feel you should be corrected.

The engine is not an MPi unit, rather a SPi unit. MPi engines as put in 1997 onwards cars had a coil pack (distributor in photo), front mounted radiator with electric fan (water pump mounted fan in photo), as well as the oil filter was screwed onto the block directly, rather than screwing into the extension arm and pointing downwards.

However, my biggest issue is the fact that in the description you have stated that a carburetor is included! If it is an injection engine, why would it come with a carb?

Please correct the listing ASAP, or I feel it must be reported to ebay as its totally misleading."

Why do people do this?

appears to have the spi throttle boddies, and he thinks that it's still called a 'carb' . He probably just knows its 'injection' but doesnt know the different between spi and mpi.

It sounds like a classic case of "copy and paste" from an existing advert that the seller stumbled across.

i had a similar thing the other day, was doing some work on a 95 corsa b 1.4 the owner was adamant it had a carburetor,
would not believe me until i thoroughly showed & explained it was a single point injection.

this is very common with clueless owners being able to only see the difference in carburetor & multi point fuel injection

I hope he reads my message and updates his listing - I know what you guys mean but its unfair for the buyer, maybe its a first timer like some people on the forum who loves their Mini but needs a new engine for it, only to spunk their money on something they didnt want.

Sometimes people rely on other people's knowledge rather than researching it themselves. I know I've trusted people on here on what to buy when I didnt know the right part to get!

Its false advertising really, and in relation to saying its an MPI when its an SPI - the differences would be difficult to tell for a 'noob' - Its an A-Series with FI - thats probably all they would know to look for...

At the same time i would also say that i doubt it is intentionally incorrect - and just a mistake from a 'noob' seller.

Yes it looks like a genuine mistake from someone who doesn't know a lot about Mini engines. A quick friendly message to explain the problem would probably have been more appropriate than threatening to report them to E bay.

I've been screwed over far too many times now to give people the benefit of the doubt. If someone is falsely advertising something, they must be told. Failing to correct the listing after they have been handed the correct information leaves no alternative but to report someone. I'm not insinuating here that there is anything bad going on, but as I said I've had my fair share of people that have played ignorant when the whole time they were lying.

All I actually said was correct the listing (as I have provided the correct data), or eBay will be notified. Nothing unfair there.
