i use the sump with a piece of wood to protect the fins to jack up the car and then put axel stands covered with rag under the side members or front corners of the subby...just don't ever use the sills O_O

Do NOT lift the car like this. You are effectively suspending the car weight on the RUBBER engine mounts. Jacking point should be under the flat part of the subframe each side.

it's not the best way to jack the car up but i don't want to scratch my subframe >_< the wood spreads the weight over the sump so it won't damage the fins and because the jack is already taking the weight of the engine, all the rubber mounts are actually suspending is the front subframe assembly and mine are all poly bushes any way  but yes, the proper place is the back corners of the front subby but that is where i like to put the axel stands so i have to jack it up somewhere else >_<

It is a downright dangerous way to jack it up, poly mounts or not. In fact the poly mounts are more likely to break than the standard ones. Remember that you have the heavy end of the shell, as well as the subframe and running gear, hanging on the engine mounts if you do that.

And, putting axle stands under the rear end of the subframe is not very good, as the two end sections are not very stiff and may bend.

it isn't the best way but it's been fine so far, i have access to a proper ramp and pit so it doesn't get jacked up all that often :shifty:

Put a thin chunk of wood between jack and subby. Saves the scratching.

Yes, and the wood discourages slipping too.

Hi guys. While we're on the topic, I'm going to attempt to jack up the front end of my '75 mini 1000 using the subframe as discussed earlier in this thread. Problem is trying to work out exactly which jack is going to fit underneath? Does anyone know the 'official' subframe ground clearance? Have ordered a low entry jack but not sure if it'll be delivered in time so may need to dash to the nearest halfords and pick one up..... think their lowest goes to about 14cm - will that do it?

Before anyone mentions the drive onto some wood approach - the brakes are seized so I cant move it back or forth, hence the need to jack it so I can give the drums a whack with a mallet.

Thanks!!

The ground clearance was claimed to be 6", but I don't know where that was measured, presumably at the lowest point, which I would guess would be the exhaust in the region on the front floor/toeboard. So a 14cm jacj should fit, if the suspension has not sagged, i.e. no worn cones or knuckles.

Thanks tiger99!

Will probably need to make sure the tyres are pumped all the way up too!
