Could this work by having what is essentially a normal distributor, with no mechanical or vacuum advance.
Thus a fixed advance at all rpm, then introducing an actuator that could advance/ retard the ignition by turning the backplate/ rotor arm relative to the shaft.
Or having the rotor completely separate from the shaft, and having a motor or something that could rotate the rotor arm correctly to provide the proper advance.
Or you could have no rotor arm at all, just a sensor that detects the position of the shaft, and an electronic module/relay that fires a spark to the correct HT at the right time.

The more you think about it the more interesting it becomes, trying to work out a reliable way of achieving it...

And to answer Danny's question directly, you would have to adjust the position of the rotor with regards to the shaft, but as they are both spinning quite fast this could be a problem, and I cant really see them using this way as it is too much hassle compared to the other ways of achieving the same thing, as you would need something that would be mounted on the shaft, that could rotate with it, while receiving information about what the advance should be.

Don't forget the single point injection engines use a distributor to 'distribute' the spark, Thats all it does, via the rotor arm and cap. The timing is controlled by the ECU, there are no weights or springs. As long as the rotor arm is somehwere near the cap contacts when the spark fires it will jump the gap. I'd assume that this new dizzy just uses a very small ecu inside the dizzy itself....

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. Very excited about this product.
Units are in production as we speak. We are hoping to be ready to sell our ones by the middle to end of November.
Our dedicated webpage has gone live today, just waiting for Google to index it for easier search results.
In brief though the Aldon Amethyst is a mappable ignition system which will discreetly connect
to your distributor to retain that classic car look. It will give you full control over advance characteristics for vacuum, boost and TPS configuration, also includes adjustable ‘soft’ rev-limit, variable dwell and immobiliser.

I bought something from the US a couple of weeks ago and got stung an extra £30 import tax ( on top or delivery) by UPS. Buy British, with British customer service that's what I say.
