Hi sounds like a good idea but the underneath is pretty solid and ive got very high axle stands but thanks anyway.

Hi, "solid underneath" is not something you associate much with Minis. Chances are you'll need to do *some* welding on the underside and welding upside down isn't fun or easy - or safe.

I'll second that I'm afraid.. check the panel just behind the front wheels that joins to the floorpan and the front bulkhead (flitch panels) also the rear subframe mounts and the boot floor.. mine was/is a right mess.. it's unfortunate but all minis rust.. and obviously check your sills... if you have oversills I'd consider changing them..

hi Webby.
there are loads of products out there. some people swear by Hammerite... some hate it... I have used it for bits of the suspension etc but for the undwrsude of the car I am using Clostermans chassis paint. I'm not saying its the best but in my opinion its good. I've used it before for various bits and it seems really good and sets rock hard.

before you paint anything though you have to make sure the surface is free of rust and is clean. the best way is to go over whatever you're painting with a wire wheel on a drill or angle grinder or a grinding disk etc. Also you're best to treat any rusty areas with a rust reverter solution. There are various ones on the market. I can't quite remember what it is I use. (I'm at work at the moment but will look when I get home)
From experience I've found it useful to etch prime the surface before you paint it too as it just gives that added bit of protection, the paint goes on easier and you get a better finish.. I know some paints say they don't need primer but I always do anyway.

hope this helps.
good luck
joe

Hi mate.
This is what I use. It's brilliant in my opinion.

If you find some rust, grind it back and coat it in this stuff. It will go on white. When is cured the rust it will turn black/navy blue. Then cover up with etch primer. To be honest, I've not used that much. Most rust ive found I have cut out as its been quite bad but anything that's not been too bad I've ground what I can off and covered with this stuff.
I don't think there's a need to cover the whole car with it.
Cheers.
Joe
