How do I check it can u tell me in simple steps

ok where the air filter is in the middle of it is the dash pot.
unscrew the black bit on the top and lift out.
theres a plunger connected to the bit u unscrewed.
checked this plunger is covered in thin oil

I see that no-one has commented at all on the mention of strange sounds from the region of the distributor, which must be a major clue to the problem. I am wondering if the drive gears have failed. Probably worth taking the distributor out, then extracting the gear with a long 5/16" UNF bolt (DON'T drop it into the sump!) to have a look, but the timing will need resetting afterwards as there is no guarantee that the gear will be engaged with the teeth meshing the same way again.

It has alse been known for a distributor drive dog to be forced into engagement with the gear the wrong way round, which will certainly result in strange noises, and damage to the distributor and gear.

Got a mobile mechanic coming out tomorrow to let me know what it is before I end up replacing every thing

Mechanic bit confused about it really but thinks its ignition coil so have ordered one and he's fitting it tomorrow night
