Short block is almost done
I've fitted a EVOLUTION001 cam from Minispares. The Kent VP3 was insane for a road car especially on a 998 with low torque at the bottom end.
New cam plate fitted, every clearance checked and within spec

Windage tray fitted to gearbox. I'm not sure how effective they are but every little helps I guess

I'm checking everything goes together spot on. I've fitted the clutch housing dry in this pic.

Next up is to check the idler gear end float with the gasket fitted and bolt the gearbox to the short block.

What benefit does fitting a windage tray give? Sorry for my ignorance.

The main purpose is to prevent oil splash back onto the crankshaft which reduces BHP

Checking the idler gear end float. Different gaskets have different thicknesses so it's important to check even though it's only done 1200 miles

This is an "ISKY" cam follower........ Yeah right. Taking a file to it for a few seconds did this

These are soft.... look at the wear

uky6dIx.jpg

As a comparison, I tried to file an old genuine gerbox main shaft. The file wouldn't touch it. You can also hear a difference in sound.
I filed one of the old baulk rings too and that was the same.

Moving forwards, I'm using these lifters along with the new Evolution1 camshaft from Mini spares

Sure, When you return the cash I gave you to build my gearbox.
When I collected it completely unassembled, you told me you hadn't spent the money.

The cam timing was 8 degrees out so I bought an 8 degree woodruff key

Hveji3r.jpg

Can't say I'm thrilled with this arrangement. The other thing is you really need to preload the pushrod onto the lifter.....
The best way to do it with the head though on and since they talk about 1 degree of timing error losing 1BHP things can soon add up.
The only problem is finding exact TDC because you can't put the dti on the piston.

I've bought a vernier from MED.

The plan is to time is up with the head off and re check it with the head on.
I just need to find a way of finding exact TDC with the head on.

Pete

Use a stop down the spark plug hole.

Or find TDC on the piston as usual and make an accurate pointer on the flywheel (or even rig up a timing disc and pointer on that end too).

I put the flywheel on and make a pointer for that end. Set it accurately with the head off then go ahead and put it together and set it.

Sometimes the solution is staring you in the face but you can't see it!

Thanks very much for your help.

The MED timing gears are a much better fit than the Minispares ones

I'm also changing things around in the engine bay to make more room

sL0wKlm.jpg

Some wiring mods so I've re wrapped the loom

I'm moving the air horns from the engine bay to make it easier to get to the oil filter. The fastenings on them are poor so I've bonded the bolts in with firberglass resin

Hi mr petrol,
You may find the MED Vernia 180deg out on the timing for the dots to cam timing,
Mine was,I disassembled and turned around via vernia,
Only a 5 min job,
With dots lined up mine was rocking/firing on no4 :-)
