I'm due to take delivery of my Mini next week and I rang up my insurance company today to try and sort it out.

They game me a decent quote to add the Mini to a Multicar Policy along with my current car so I think I'm going to go with this.

My question is...

When they ask 'does the vehicle have any modifications or any optional extras?' I don't really know how to answer it. I'm not really sure what is standard on the car and what has been upgraded. Do things like the interior count as a modification?

My plans are to put some 10's on it, some hi-lo's and change the arches to something more suitable. I try to keep everything legal so if I was to tell them, would this affect the premium much?

I'm really just asking for your experiences with declaring 'modifications' and the effect on your premium - preferably with Admiral.

Regards,

Marc.

Im with admiral, passed my test 2 weeks ago, 17 years old and cost 1600 a year fully comp. Admiral multi-car for me personaly was the cheapest i could find, im not sure if this is due to being a new driver or if this is true for everyone. My car has got a body kit, 1275 enguine, leather bucket seats, lowerd..... the whole lot...... Supriseingly for some reason they thought it was a 1.0l although on hte log book it clearly states 1275? They also didnt ask if i had any modifications so my argument is 'they didnt ask so i thought they knew'.

I did get a quote though for my body kit added onto my insurance and as a young new driver it only added on £100 so if i was you id just say 'im looking to do these mods to my car, how much more would it cost' and then make your decision.

Hope ive helped!! Jack

Yeah you need to tell them your mods on the car, whether it be wheels, suspension or even different seats!

I'm gonna be taking out insurance with Graham Sykes soon as they were the cheapest by 500 quid for me with a modded mini.

17, passed 2 months ago and a mini with: Bodykit, 13x7 minilites, different exhaust system, different seats and different dash as well I think haha!

Some companies dont care about visual mods like bodykits and wheels (as told to me by Adrain Flux) but its the performance attributes that add too your premium.

How on earth do you figure this out??????????

Do you think insurers are telepathic?

I don't see this ending well for you in the event of a claim.

I declared everything on my car, (wheels, seats, steering wheel) just because if they can find a way not to pay out they wont pay out,

we are with admiral because their multi-car worked out cheaper but at some point we will move onto a specialist policy for the mini's as its a bit of a risk since they pay "market value" which is open to interpretation. I was also a bit tricky explaining why a john cooper conversion wasn't a modification since that is how the car was sold. My experience is that the helpfulness does vary and I wouldnt fancy having to go through a claim but for the moment we are sticking with them.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I've got to keep it legal like! Can't imagine crashing and my insurance being null and void!

Although I appreciate your input, is there anyone with 5+ years NCB who could help me out? Cause I image that the insurers see a 17 year old with a bodykit as a higher risk than a 27 year old with a body kit.

I don't mean this offencively by the way!

I've got an 'Agreed Value' policy. I need to send them some pictures and stuff and they will either agree or disagree with my valuation. You should ask about this....

I have fleet insurance with these people..

http://www.tradex.co...fleet-insurance

One policy covers me and Mrs Shifty on all our cars, I can have as many as I like up to a value of £20k(which for me would mean about 30 cars!!)

I'm just going to stick with admiral I think, purely for ease and the way they have calculated my NCB on a second car. Its crap how you can't use your NCB on more than one car - how could i possibly crash two cars at the same time?!

I think £327 fully comp with agreed valuation isn't too bad for 22 years old.

Did your premium rise much?

I am 19 and no no claims, and it didnt rise at all as they didnt change the value of the vehicle, but I wanted to change the exhaust which was going to cost me about £70 more as its a performance mod
