Ok, you can use your Windows Key on your keyboard, hold that down and press R. That will open the run dialog and you can continue with the instructions above starting from typing "cmd" in the box.

Deathrow, I just had a look through the site for Hitman pro and cant believe i never new about it! i will earmark this site for future use if need be. Its good to hear from someone like yourself that there IS a program/scanner out there that actually works. I do feel however that Mister Bridger may also have a pretty clogged system too hence the reason i suggested a new install rather than try a cleanup. Hope the ping can find his email issue too.

Good luck Mister Bridger

Oh I agree Yoda, a clean and install is usually my preferred course of action but it's very easy for me as I have all my documents and files stored on different a different physical disk to the operating system so I can format and reinstall my OS without a lot of messing around.

Hitman Pro is by no means 100%, with malware and viruses I always run a cocktail of software, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, AVG, Malware Bytes, Hitman Pro and one a can't remember the name of but it's for detecting changes to some key files.

The downside with system restore is it's designed not to modify anything but the operating system so the virus can hide in your personal files and return at a later date.

I never use system restore for that very reason. I learned the hard way regarding backups many years ago, and i too have a separate physical drive, purely for this purpose. I also do a ghost drive everytime i update anything so that i dont lose anything but the past few hours work if anything goes wrong. I can put my hands on all my stuff for over the last twenty years on various drives.

I see you still remember Dos commands too, i think my brain dropped most of that a while ago LOL.

Shame Mister Bridger is not a bit closer to one of us or we could save him having to buy a new Pooter!

I've never been a fan of system restore. Every time I've used it my machine never feels quite the same sadly. It's a nice idea but not the best solution.

Knowing some command line is always handy :proud:.

Yeah, just had a look and he couldn't really be much further away!

If the machine isn't too out dated though it may have a recovery partition. They're not too involved usually and he could restore his PC to its former performance.

When i do that cmd thing it says ' not recognised as an internal or external command, operable programme or batch file.' Should I be putting in the www's or the brackets? As you can tell I am hopelessly out of my depth here!

right click in the black window then select all, ctrl-c, and paste into tmf with ctrl-v

System restore probably works for me then, as I'm the cause of all my pc errors O_O

I'm curious about the host override, is that a feature in Windows, or your web browser?

by the way I ran system restore but it said it couldn't do it as there had been no changes to the computer since the date chosen (Oct 20th)

The ping command is called that refering to a submarine "SONAR". You send a signal somewhere and wait for a response. In this case it was sent to www.virginmedia.com with an internet protocol (IP) address of 212.250.162.12. The signal was sent four times and it took between 35 and 36 milliseconds to receive the response back to you. The rest are just the statistics of the test (ping).
You can perform this test anytime or to check if there is a connection to a specitic website although some websites will not reply back due to security reasons.

Best stick with Deathrow, he's the expert.

However, you should have a calendar in the system restore window, the dates are in bold if there is a restore point on that day.

If he was going to check whose IP address it is, it does belong to Virgin media - so that's good news.

Yes I used that but it said no changes had occurred so wouldn't perform the function

Righto, the ip your computer resolved for the Virgin Media website is correct which is good as there is no host override in place.

Can you still not access the Virgin Media website mister bridger? Have you tried downloading Hitman Pro and letting that do a full scan of your machine?

Sorry Ethel only just seen that.

It's common to most operating systems I believe. It's not something you find out about unless you really need to use it.
