may be obvious but why is copper not legal ?

Because it fractures too easily. It cant withstand the repeated pressure applied when you stomp on the brakes

............ apparently it's because the price of copper has gone up.............

That's not a great excuse. The cost of the material for those few pipes is next to nothing.

I could buy a whole bundle (30m) of 15mm copper pipe for half that!

Seeing as they shouldn't be pure copper it's a rip off anyway as they aren't fit for purpose

These pipes are copper. It is very easy to tell from the colour. Cunifer has a grey tinge to it and is never as shiny.

Personnaly I would not use them. As has been suggested already, more than once, they suffer fatigue failure after a number of pressure cycles. Sadly, thay are not specifically illegal in the UK, although anything that makes the car unsafe is indirectly illegal. They are specifically illegal in the US, Australia and many parts of Europe, amongst other places. Mostly a pipe approved to a specification appropriate for vehicle brakes is required. Copper may meet a BS spec, but that spec is only for pipes for general use, e,g. microbore central heating.
